i GEORG i H. BAILEY,-Qi4 JERSEY CITY, vNEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERIUA'U WATER AND GAS-'PIPE CMPANY.
Leners Patent No; 65,863, 'dans .im 1s, 1867.
@its intende numb to' in tigen tctters ntcnt'mn nniaing part n` In sami. V
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 4
Bc it known that I, Gnomi); II. BAILEY, of Jersey City, in the countyoi` Hudsdn, and State .of New Jersey,
have invented a new and'improved Mode of' Tapping Pipes of ,Wroughtlron and Cementfand Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figui-(2 1 is a cross-section of :t wrought-iron pipe having cement applied to it, with m3'y improfedtap Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the pipe and tap.
Figures B, 4, and 5,' show the parts of the tap in detail. .4
Similar letters of referenceiindicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The mode vhitherto'adopted of tapping pipes of iron and eemcnt,is to attach the stop-cock to the outside of the iron pipe by means o f solder, and when thus secured to bore through the pipe and the cement on the inside thereof. By this mode of tapping the connection 'requires tol'be made with great care, and by .n.pcrson skilled in soldering-. Even in the hands of a careful person there is danger of scaling or chipping ofi` the cement lining in boring, lcavingnI portion ofl the iron exposed to oxidation, and liable torapid decay.
To remedy the objectionto the alove-mentionedmodc'of tapping the combined iron ,and cement pipes, my invention consists in the employment o tlaA` ilangedtubehaving ascrewgtlnjeafl uponjt, which tube is open at both ends and applicdto the iron pjpe by means of a lock or clamp-nut, which will form a'substnntial connection, as will be hereinafter described. l 4
To enable others skilled in the a'it to understand my invention, I will' describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, A. represent-s the metal-'shell or pipe; B the cement lining; C.th c outside 'covering of cement; D the vflanged nipple, and E the locking-nut. l.
The mode 4ofapplication is as follows: The iron, in the process of forming it into pipes, is punched wil'iia hole of proper size. VA metal tnbeor nipple having a screw-thread cut upon it, and u flange, a, formed on it near one end, is passed through the hole which is through the pipe, soA as' to leave the flange a on the inside of this pipe, 'Ihe lock-nut is then screwed upon the tube or nipple from the outside' of the.pipd, so as to drfi" .and clamp the metal of the pipe between the flange a and nut E, es shown in the drawings.- The nipple is of such lengsth that when screwed f ast sufficient` room will remain above the hut to attach thp stop-cock. In the process of lining the pipe the outer end of the nipple is closed with a cap or plug, G; the flanged end becomes entirely bedded in the cement, andthe nipple,as far as the external -plug or cap, is filled nt the same time. The end of the nipple projects into thevpipe beyondthe 'flange just far enough to be entirely covered with cement', without giving any considerable thickness beyond it. By this means I furnish a pipe ,alreiidy tapped, and nothing remains to be'done, when it is desired to connect at any given pontthnt to attach the stop-cock by 'screwingA it on the projecting end of the nipple and boring through the cement to the insidejof the pipe.v This may bedon'c Withoutdistuibinguthe cementlinfin'g. The mode of tapping witlnanipple which is open at both its ends, asabove described, renders it unnecessary to `drill through the iron pipe in the act of making a con nection, and by extending the inner end of the nipple nearly to the inner surface of. the lining, the latter is free from injury during the clearing of thc ccmentefrom the interior-of this nipple.r
Having described my invention, what claim' as new, and desire to 'secure by`Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the topD', bored throughfrorn end to end, with the combination'iron and cement pipe, substantially in the manner and for the. purpose described. Y p A y 2. Constructing the flange a upon the tubeor nipple at an intermediate point between the en'ds thereof, as shown in iig. 4 let' the drawings, so that when the device is ,applied toa cement-lined pipe, the cement lining shall not be liable to `ln"r3: tic'oit` in tapping, substantially ns described.
