SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,962, dated September 18, 1900. Application filed November 1, 1899. serial No- 735,471. (No model.)

Be itknown that I, OHARLESROEHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented ordiscoveredcertain new and useful Improvements in Cars, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in cars, and has for its objecta combination and arrangement whereby a car can be quickly converted from a closed to an open car and the reverse.
The most practicable form or construction thus far in use consists, generally stated, in providing flexible sliding or rolling panels, which could be raised, a portion of the panels extending when raised into and partially across the top of the car. These panels are provided with windows,the glass-holding sash being secured to the panel and movable only therewith. g
The object of the present invention is to provide movable panels, which are formed in part of glass-carrying sashes having a width approximately equal to the distance between the side posts of the car.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a car having myimproveinents applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a car having some of the panel spaces closed and some open; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view, the plane of section being indicated by the line III III, Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention the car, as regards the floor, roof, 850., is constructed in the usual or any suitable manner, the roof being supported by end, corner, and side width to permit of the'formation of vertical grooves 2 3 4 in the sides. Flexible sections 5 are arranged between the side posts with their edges projecting into the grooves 2. These grooves extend the entire length of the posts, so that the sections 5 can be shifted from the lower part ofthe car, in which position they form portions of the inclosing sides, to the upper part of the carbehind the permanent sides 6 at the top of the car. The lower sashes 7 are arranged with their edges in the grooves 3, which extend from the upper edges of the sections 5 to the top of the car. The upper sashes 8 have their edges arranged in the grooves 4, which extend from the upper edges of the lower sashes to the top of the car. I
When it is desired to convert a closed car to an open one, the several sashes and flexible sections are raised to the positions shown to the right in Fig. 1, thereby leaving the sides of the car entirely open for a distance from the bottom of the car a little greater than the height of a man. The sashes and flexible sections are held in their raised positions by catches, (indicated at 9,) said catches being of any suitable form or construction.
When it is desired to change the car to a closed condition, the sashes and sections can be quickly lowered.
It is characteristic of my improvements that each of the several sections forming each panel of the car can be raised and lowered independent of the others, thus permitting of the opening ofa portion of the side between adjacent posts when desired, without interfering with other parts. It is also characteristic of my improvements that the windows can be made of a width approximately equal to the distance between adjacent posts.
I claim herein as my invention 1. In a car, the combination of a series of side posts provided with parallel guides extending from different points to or approxi- 'mately to the tops of the posts, and side panels consisting of three or more independ ent flexible and non-flexible sect-ions arranged between adjacent posts, said sections being movable into the upperportion of the car independent of each other in different but parallel vertical planes,substantially as set forth.
2. In a car, the combination of a series of side posts provided with parallel guides extending from different points to or approximately to the tops of the posts, and movable panels consisting of a series of flexible and p being formed by a glass-carrying, frame, said sections being independently movable in different but parallel planes to positions alongside of each other at or near the tops of the posts, substantially as set forth.
3.
