To wZZ whowt it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KIRCHHOF- FER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan,and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hanging Cabinets and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hanging cabinets and like structures which are suspended on the wall, so as to be conveniently opened and closed; and the invention consists, first, of a cabinet comprising a base, means for suspending the same on the wall, a portfolio member composed of bottom, side, and front walls, said portfolio member being hinged to the base at the rear edge of the bottom wall, means applied to each side wall for retaining the sheets of music on the front wall, and a cover hinged at its rear edge to the base and provided at its front end with a catch for securing the portfolio member in closed position.

The invention consists, secondly, of a cabinet or like articles and a plurality of suspension devices for suspending it on the wall, each of said suspension devices being formed of an upper and two lower members, and means for connecting the lower ends of the lower suspension members with the cabinet, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved hanging cabinet. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged front view of the hanging cabinet, showing the same in open position. Fig. at is an'enlarged side view of the cabinet, showing it in closed position. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the cabinet, showing in dotted lines the position assumed by the portfolio member when the same is swung into open position; and Fig. 6 is a vertical detail section of a catch or clasp for holding the portfolio member of the cabinet in closed position.

Referring to the drawings, a represents the base of the cabinet, which is preferably provided at its rear part with felt or other cushions a, so as to rest against the wall. To the base a is hinged a portfolio member which consists of a bottom wall d, two side walls f, and a front wall 0. The rear edge of the bottom wall (1 is connected with the base a by a hinge or hinges c. The bottom, side, and front walls of the portfolio member are rigidly secured together, so that it can be lowered on its hinges e from a vertical position into a horizontal position. To the inner side of each side wall f of the portfolio member is attached a plate g, provided with lugs at its upper ends, said lugs carrying pivotally mounted arms h, which are actuated by a leaf-springt', so that the cross-barj at the outer end of each arm h is pressed firmly on the sheet-music A or other articles stored in the portfolio member. A cover bis also hinged to the base a by means of hinges It and provided at its front with a spring-catch 1, (shown in Fig. 6,) said catch pressing against a button m at the upper edge of the front wall '0 of the portfolio member. At the upper part of the base a are arranged horizontal rods n, which are provided at their inner ends with upwardly-extended slotted arms 0. The portfolio member of the cabinet is supported when swung in open or lowered position by means of chains or other suspension devices w, which are connected at their upper ends with stirrups 0, attached to horizontal rods a at the upper part of the base a. and at their lower ends with loops u on the outside of the side walls f. The chains or other suspension devices 20 are each provided with a weight or, so that when the parts are returned from the open position (shown in Fig. 5) to the closed position (shown in Fig. 4) the weights will prevent the entering of the chains between the side walls of the portfolio member and the base during the closing motion of the same.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a plurality of suspension devices are arranged for suspending the cabinet on the wall. Each suspension device is composed of an upper member 0 and two lower members r W, the upper member being connected at its upper end by a hook t with the molding B, attached to the wall, and at its lower end with the lower members r T The lower members 1" 1' are connected, respectively, with hanger-plates g, which are secured by set-screws p to the slotted arms 0 at the inner ends of the rods n, and with stirrups s, which are made freely movable on the rods n in front of the hangerplates q. By the set-screws p and stirrups s the lower suspension members r r can be readily adjusted, so as to hang the cabinet in proper position on the wall 0. The upper and lower suspension members '1" r r of each suspension device are so arranged relatively to each other and to the cabinet or other article suspended therefrom that the center of gravity of the suspended article is located between the point of connection of the upper and lower suspension members and the wall, so that the cabinet or other article is pressed by its own weight against the wall. Should the center of gravity of the article and its contents fall in front of a perpendicular line passing through the point of connection of the suspension .members, the lower rear member has to be elongated by its adjusting mechanism sufiiciently to bring the center of gravity of the suspended article either in line with or somewhat back of the perpendicular line passing through the point of connection of the suspension members. The adjusting mechanism serves, therefore, for the purpose of producing the proper equilibrium of the suspension devices and the article suspended therefrom relatively tothe Wall.

My improved hanging cabinet is used as follows: After it is suspended and. properly adjusted by the lower suspension members, so that it hugs the wall, the hinged cover is opened and the portfolio member moved in downward direction into a horizontal position until it is supported by the suspension-chains w, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. The cross-barsj and arms h are then raised into upright position against the tension of their leaf-springs '11, so that the sheet-music or other matter can be placed on the front wall or removed therefrom. The cross-bars are then returned into their lowered position, so as to press the sheet-music against the front wall of the portfolio member, after which it is returned into upright position and locked by lowering the cover over the upper end of the same. The spring-actuated cross-bars pre vent the music from being displaced when the portfolio member is returned to its upright position.

It is obvious that the suspension devices may be used for suspending other articles,

and that the same may be attached in any other manner to the cabinet or other article, provided that the proper equilibrium of the suspension devices and the article suspended therefrom relatively to the Wall is established.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cabinet for sheet-music and the like, consisting of a base, a portfolio member comprising bottom, side and front walls, said portfolio member being hinged to the base at the rear edge of.its bottom wall, spring-actuated clamping-arms hinged to the side Walls of the portfolio member and adapted to retain the sheet-music or other matter on the front wall of the same, suspension devices for supporting said portfolio member in lowered position, and a cover hinged to the base and provided at its front end with means for securing said portfolio member in closed position, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with a cabinet or like article, of a plurality of suspension devices for suspending it on the wall, each of said suspension devices consisting of an upper member, means for suspending the upper member from the Wall, two converging members, means for connecting the lower members with the lower end of the upper member, means for connecting the lower ends of the lower members with the cabinet or other ar-
