Description

'NITED "ST TES" PATENT QFFIC'.
GUSTAFF F. times, on EVERETT, WASHINGTON.
COPY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,599, dated September 11, 1900-.
Application filed April 2,
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that LGUsTAFF F. HEISS, aciti zen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to improvements in copy-holders, the construction and advantages of which will be hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus viewed from one side; and'Fig. 2, a simi-. lar view, the device being seen from the front;
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient copy-holder wherein the indicator or line-marker may be moved step by step or line by line down the face or edge of the sheet to indicate a particular point .or line on the page.
Referring to said drawings, A denotes the base of the apparatus, which is preferably in the form of a box containing a drawer B for the reception of the copy or other material used in connection with the device. Hinged to the front portion of the base or box is a support 0, preferably formed with a series of cross-notches D in its rear face, said notches working in conjunction with a brace E, the lower end of which bears in a notch formed in the rear face of the box. The inclination of the support 0 may be varied by placing the upper end of the brace E in one or another of said cross-notches D, as will readily be understood. 1
Suitable guide rods or wires F are secured between the upper end of the support 0 at one side thereof and a projection G, formed at the lower end of said support 0. These wires or rods serve as guides for a movable index-finger or pointer H, between which the wires or bars pass, as will be noted upon reference to Fig. 1.
To normally maintain the index-finger or pointer H in its elevated position, I employ a springI. (Best seenin Fig.1.) Saidspring,as will be noted, is bent at right angles at one end and secured at the rear of the box or base A at the farther side thereof, while the opposite end extends upwardly and is connected to the index-finger or member l-I. This con- 1900- fierial No. 11,179. (No model.)
carryinga grooved wheel or pulley K, to the axle of which is secured a toothed or ratchet wheel L, the pulley and wheel rotating as one. Extending from the pulley and made fast thereto is a cord or band M, the opposite end of which is secured to the index-finger or pointer H in any suitable manner.
To actuatethe pulley and ratchet-wheel, I employ a key N, which is connected to one end of a spring bar or lever 0, said lever be ing fulcrumed at a point upon the plate J in rear of the pulley and ratchet-wheel. A pin P is placed beneath the lever intermediate its fulcrum and the ratchet-wheel, which pin normally holds the actuating tooth or lug Q, carried by the lever, from engaging the teeth of the ratchet-wheel. The normal position ofthis lever and its tooth is shown in Fig. l, and it will be seen that upon depressing the key the lever will be forced down and the tooth or lug Q will engage the ratchet-wheel and advance the same one step, thereby winding up the cord or band, and drawing the indicating or index finger down one line. To
fprevent the band or cord from unwinding around the pulley, a second lever B is mounted in a manner similar to the lever 0 above referred to, except that said second lever occupies a position below the ratchet-wheel and its tooth or pawl S normally engages the teeth of the wheel and prevents any backward or retrograde movement, thereby holding the; pulley and band, andcons'equently the index-.
finger or pointer, in the position to which it has been drawn by the depression of the key N. A pin T is placed beneath said spring arm or lever B and "holds the same so that the tooth or pawl S will be normally in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel.
A finger-key U is secured upon the outer end of the lever R in order that it may be readiiy The sheet in Fig. 2. As the index-finger or pointer is drawn down the spring I will of course move backward slightly, and it is for this reason that it is connected to the box in the manner shown and described-+that is, to permit such rearward movement. I By removing the brace E the support (3 the'brace may be safe keeping.
Having thus described I claim is stantially as described.
2. In a copy-holder, the combination of a suitable base; a1copy-support eXtendingup-T ward therefrom; an'index-finger or pointer; moiuntedatone side of said support; asp ring 1 for normallyrholdingsaid index fiugerweriv pointer .in its elevated position; lmeans i or drawing said indexfinger downwardly 3 against the act-ion of the spring; and mechanism for actuating said means step :by step,

or copy is denoted by the reference-letter V my invention, what f I the cord thereon substantially as described,
whereby the index-finger will be moved downwardlyf against the action of the spring.
g 5 In a copy-holder,- the combination of a suitable base; a copy-support hinged to the forward end thereof; an adjustable brace for maintaining said support in any desired position guides connected to the side of said support; an index-finger or pointer mounted and 1 movable upon said guides; a spring for main= taining said index-fingerjn its elevated position; a pulleyjournaled upon one side of the base a'cord or band connectingsaid indexfinger and the pulley ;"a ratchet-wheel con nect'ed to the pulley; and means for moving 1 said ratchet-Wheel step by step and thereby may be folded down upon the box, the device being thus made compact and occupying but a comparativelysmall space, while. placed in the drawer for winding up the cord and drawing down the index-finger.
