IPATENT OFFICE.
WALTHER FHNDRICH, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO CLIFFORD WILLIAM KEMP, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
SUSPENSION-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,486, dated September 4, 1900.
Application filed March 23,1900. Serial No. 9,918. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTHER FHNDRICH, manufacturer, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Neustrasse, Hamburg,
in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates principally to sus- ;o pension gasdamps, and has for one of its objects to arrange the metallic suspension fittings with the gas-supply pipes in such a manner that they are removed from the iniuence of the products of combustion arising from 'the burner of such lamps, so that such fittings whenmade of polished brass or the like are not liable to be tarnished or discolored by the ascending heat and fumes, as now commonly occurs in suspension-lamps. An-
2o other object is to facilitate the removal and replacement of the globe or shade, while a third object is to so arrange the suspension arms or pipes that they are disposed inside the globe, by which a novel and elegant ap- 2 5 pearance is impartedto the lamp.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents a side elevation of a suspension gas-lamp constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, but with the globe 3o or shade and its detachable support shown in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the said lamp with the same parts in section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the lamp, showing how the globe or shade is introduced into position from below and also showing the detachable support of the lamp in section and separately. Fig. al represents a View of a. lamp in which only a single suspension-arm is employed. Fig. 5 is a View, partly in side 4o elevation and partly in section, showing a stop-cock fitting in longitudinal section.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings. Y
In the construction represented in Figs. 1, ,n :2, and 3, VoL-is a terminal fitting in connection with a gas-supply, being either a suitable wall patras or a part of a chandelier, and has proceeding from it a branched or bifurcated 5o bracket b, from the separated terminations b l of which a hanger consisting of a pair of suspension-arms c depends and is connected at its lower end c' to the casing or body part d of a stop-cock, into which a plug CZ/ is iitted for controlling the supply of gas to a superimposed burner e, carrying a gallery f, upon which thechimney g rests. This chimney is disposed in the middle of the lamp and between the branched or spreading members of the bracket b, which are so disposed relative 6o to the eXit to the chimney that the products of combustion arising from the latter are delivered clear of the said suspension members. Either'one or both of the branches and suspension-arms constitutes a gasway for supplying the burner wit-h gas.
Surrounding and inclosing both the burner with its chimney and the suspension-arms is a globe or shade h, carried by a separable support z', having a seat for the globe and de- 70 tachably connected to a wol-med neck d2 of the stop-cock casing d by means of a screwed collar t", forming a part of the said support, which said collar is of suiiicient diameter internally as to clear and admit of passing over the turn d3 of the stop-cock plug d. It will thus be seen that the suspension-arms c are disposed between the chimney and the globe, which latter, with its support, is introduced into position around the arms and So chimney7 from below when the support is removed (see Fig. 3) and is retained or held in its proper position, as shown in Figs. l and 2, by screwing the support, as aforesaid, onto the neck of the stop-cock casing.
It is obvious that instead of supporting the burner, chimney, and globe of the lamp by bracket branches and suspension-arms arranged in duplicate, as in Figs. l to 3, the. said parts may equally be supported by a 9o single bracket member Z9 and suspension-arm c, as represented in Fig. 4, with the said arm c still coming between the outer shade hand chimney g, or the single suspension-arm may proceed direct from a suitable terminal in- 95 stead of depending from a branch or bracket, as shown.
In the drawings I have shown the preferred manner of detachably connecting the support to the lamp, but except in so far as specificloo ally mentioned in .the following clauses'of claim my invention is not confined to that preferred form.A
While lIv have shown speciically herein a particular form of stop-cock tting, it is to be understood that I do not limit my invenvlfion or claims to that particular form; -bntit is merely illustrative of one :suitable-arrangementof stop-cock fitting.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent i'sl. In suspension 1amps, the combination with a double-armed or branched bracket, of a hanger consisting of a pair of depending` arms arranged to come-between the globe and the chimney of the lamp,.and terminatingin a burner-fitting, to which a support vfor the said globe is detachably secured to ,admit of 'g the globe being introduced into position from below, substantially as and for the .purpose described and also as set forth panying drawings. c
3. In suspension-lamps, the. combination with a bracket or support, of a hanger coming between the globe and chimney ofthe lamp and terminating vin a burner-fitting, to -which a-globe-support -is detachably secured in the accom# atoadmit of thesaid globe being introduced into position from below, substantially as herein described, and also as set forth in the raccompanying drawings.
4. Ina suspension-lamp, the combination with av double-armed or branched bracket, a
'hanger consisting of Va pair of depending arms arranged te go between the globe and the chimney of the lamp, a burner-fitting supported by said :hanger and provided with ja screwed neck, va chimney arranged over the burner-.fitting a'support having a detachable screw connection with the screwed `neck of the burner-.fitting and :provided with a seat for the globe,.and a globe resting in said seat,
L' allso arranged that the .globe maybe introduced into position from below, substantially as described. y
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand Yin presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTI-IER FHNDRICH.
