IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTBRS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known thatI, -MATTHEW EASTERBRQOK, of Geneva, in the county of Ontario, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in the manner of producing the fFast and Slow Speed for the Cutters of Harvesters and I do hereby declare. that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, r eference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 TS a top view of my invention.
Figure 2 is an inside elevation, showing ascction of the working parts, taken in the plane indicated by the red line 0 in fig. 1.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention consists in arranging two loose pinio'ns upon the crank-shaft of harvesters, so as to gear into two separate sets of teeth--each set having a difi'erent radius-upon the face of a bevel-wheel on the countershaft, and providing one or more suitable clutches feathered to the crank-shaft and operated by a hand-lever, whereby either pinion may be locked to the crank-shaft, and its speed be increased or decreased, as desired.
To'enahle others to make and use my invention, I. will describe its construction and operation.
I provide the counter-shaft S with a bevel-wheel, B, having two sets of teeth, 6 and d, and the crank-shaft C with two pinionsfand g, which are hung loosely upon the shaft, thejournal-box It being between them. The shafts C and S and the bevel-wheel and pinions are so arranged as to keep the wheels always in gear. I place the two clutches jand is upon the shaft C. They are feathered to the shaft in the usual manner.- The clutches are operated by the forks a of the slide 8, the latter being attached to the frame, and connected to the hand-lever Z,
as shown in fig. 2. Then the lever stands in the position shown by the full lines, (fig. 2,) the fast speed is given to the crank-shaft and knife-bar, and when in the opposite position, shown by the dotted lines Z, they receive the slow speed. When it .is placed at the intermediate point, the clutches are both thrown out of lock and the crank-shaft remains at rest. One clutch made double may be used by placing it between the pinions: and hanging the shaft byabox at the end or back of the pinions f. The two pinions may be rigidly attached to the crank-shaft, and two' separate und'independont bevel-wheels hung loosely uponthe counter-shaft S, and the clutches j and k feathered to that shaft and made to lock to eitherof the hevels, the same as they now do to the piuions. .The bevel-wheels should be both provided with long hubs or bearings upon the counter-shaft, if this construction is used.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the two loose piuions fand .g on the crank-shaft C, in combination with the bevelwheel having two sets of teeth I; and d, when the said piuions are locked to the shaft by n. clutch or clutches,
substantially as herein shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
