H. R. SHEPPARD. GAS Ann coAL RANGE.
(Application file d Apr; 27, 1900.) (No Model.)
' a citizen of the United States, residing in Phil-` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD R. SI-IEPPARD, OF` PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS AND COAL RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ratensNo. 656,485, dated August 21, 1900. Y
Original application filed August 27, 1898 Serial No. 689,670. Divided and this application filed April 27, 1900. Serial No.
14,604. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern/ Be it known that I, HOWARD R. SHEPPARD,
adelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Gas and Coal Ranges, of which `the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to certain improvements in combination gas and coal ranges in which gas is used for heating theoven, and is a division of an application filed by me on the 27th day of August, 1898, Serial No. 689,670.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the range of this character, so that the heating mechanism can beintroduced into the oven Without interfering With the ordinary construction thereof.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View of suflicient of a range to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional vieW through the gas-chamber inthe oven on the line b b, Fig. 2. Fig. lis a plan View showing a modification of the arrangement of the oven-heater; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional View through the modified form of gas-chamber shown in Fig. .4, taken on the line c c.
1 represents the body of the range, 2 is the oven, and 3 is the fire-box, provided with the ordinary grate for burning coal and having the usual ash-pit 5.
6 is the iiue passing over the oven from the flrechamber and around the former to the smoke-stack.
8 is the feed-pipe, connecting the gas-supply pipe at the back of the range With the vertical pipe 9 at the front of the range. This pipe 9 communicates with the burner in the oven through the pipes 10 and 1l and with the burners 19 19 at the top plate through a pipe 6.
Formed in the base-plate 12 of the oven 2 is a gas passage or chamber 13, with which the pipe 11 communicates. This passage is trough-'shaped and has a series of lugs 14, on which rests the detachable plate 15, having aseries of perforations 16 therein. This plate is also preferably provided With slots 17 at each side, so that the mixture of air and gas can escape from the passage 13 through said perforations and slots into the oven.
I have shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the passage or chamber 13 having the detachable form of plate arranged across the center of the oven; but it will be understood that it may be arranged lengthwise in the oven and at one side of the same, and the notches 17 in each side of the plate may be omitted, as indicated in the modication, Figs. 4 and 5, or the passage or chamber 13 may be in the form of a circular ring-A in the center of the base-plate of the oven, if desired. 4
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination in a range, of an oven, the bottom of said oven having a recess formed therein, a gas-pipe communicating with said recess, a loose burner-plate fitting Within the recess, said plate being flushwith the upper surface of the bottom plate of the oven, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a range, of an oven, the bottom plate of said oven having an elongated recess formed therein, a gas-pipe communicating with said recess, a loose burnerplate fitting Within the recess, said plate being iiush With the upper surface of the bottom plate of the oven, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a range, of an oven, the bottom plate of said oven having an elongated recess at the center of the plate, lugs projecting from the walls of the recess, a loose burner-plate resting Within the recess, and upon the lugs, slots in each side of the burnerplate, and a gas-pipe communicating with one end of the recess, substantially as described.
fl. The combination in a range, of an oven having an elongated recess, lugs projecting IOO
