UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH P. LEGGETT, OF OARTHAGE, MISSOURI.
SECTIONAL BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,411, dated August21, 1900.
Application filed January 27, 1900. Serial No. 2,952. (No model.)
companying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a sectional bed-bottom composed of pairs of metal drop-hangers,
' cross-ties connecting the hangers, longitudinal ties extending lengthwise of the hangers, and springs supported by said ties.
The invention consists in the construction above stated and in the details of arrangement and connection of the spring-bottom.
Figure I is a perspective view of one end of the sectional bed-bottom. Fig. I is a detail view of a slight modification. Fig. II is a side view showing the bottom in position applied to a bedstead. Fig. III is a top view of a part of the bed-bottom springs. Fig. IV is a top view of parts of one of the drop-hangers, ties, and lower ends of the springs, the portions being shown in horizontal section, taken on the line IV IV, Fig. I. Fig. V is a crosssectional View taken on the line V V, Fig. IV. Fig. VI is a cross-sectional view taken on the line VI VI,-Fig. IV.
The drop-hangers are composed of flat bars 1, arranged with their edges upright, having twists 2, vertical arms 3, and lips 4.. The lips 4 are adapted to rest upon the side rails A of the bedstead, as seen in Fig. II, so that the horizontal part of each bar is sustained in a depending position beneath the side rails of the bedstead.
5 designates cross-ties connecting the bars 1 of the drop-hangers. These cross-ties are threaded through apertures 1 in the hangerbars 1, and have their ends bent downwardly and upwardly around the lower edges of the hanger-bars in the form of loops 7, as clearly seen in Fig.. VI, by which arrangement the hanger-bars are securely united with each other.
8 designates longitudinal ties extending lengthwise of the hanger-bars, these longitudinal ties being threaded through apertures 1 in the hanger-bars 1 and having their ends bent downwardly and upwardly around the lower edges of the hanger-bars to form loops 10. (See Fig.V.) Each cross-tie 5 is formed with a kink 6, located at the intersection of the crossing longitudinal tie 8, and each longitudinal tie is provided at said intersection with a kink 9, whereby the ties are securely held together and any otherwise-liable displacement of the parts is obviated.
11 designates the springs, for which no invention per se is herein claimed, the springs being suitably held together at their upper ends and being interwoven about the ties 5 and 8 at the intersections and connected to the longitudinal ties by loops 12. The ties 5 and 8 may be either threaded through apertures in the drop hanger-bars, as shown in Fig. I, or said ties may be simply seated in notches in the upper edges of the bars, as suggested in Fig. I It is also obvious that instead of using ties of round wire, as shown in the drawings, the ties might be of any other shape in cross-section.
I claim as my invention 7 1. In a bed bottom, the combination of hangers, cross-ties connecting said hangers, longitudinal ties connected to the hangers and extending transversely of said cross-ties, and springs seated upon said ties at the intersections thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a bed-bottom, the combination of drophangers, cross ties threaded through said hangers and looped thereabout, longitudinal ties threaded through said hangers and looped thereabout, and extending transversely of said cross-ties, and springs connected to and seated upon said ties at the intersections thereof, substantially as described.
JOSEPH P. LEGGETT.
