Letters Patent No. (55,628, dated June 11, 1867.

TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs WrLLL-in Won'rn, of Sonoma, county of Sonoma, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for Winding and Unwinding Paper for Telegraph Registers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being had to the drawings a-ccompanyii'ig this specification, in which letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the usual operating table with the register A, reel No. 1, which receives the paper as it passes through the register, and reel No. 2, from which the paper is taken.
Figure 2 is an edge view of reel No. 1.
Figure 3 is an edge view of the drum and attached,ratchet-wheel.
Figure IL is an edge view of reel No. 2.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a reel which is applicable to the ordinary telegraph register for the double purpose of winding the paper andkeeping it free from kinks, and to enable the operator having the paper stretched to more readily read it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Th'e telegraph register A is the one in ordinary use. The paper at, as it passes from it, is received upon reel No. 1. This consists of a drum, B, with sides O C,'all of light cast iron, and of proper gauge 'so as to receive the paper corresponding to its width. Through the centre passes a spindle, K, with collars O 0, best shown in fig. 4:, where the reel is the same as in fig. 2, with the drum F removed. The movable drum F slides on the spindle K, and has attached to one of the end-plates (L a a ratchet, P. Attached to one side of the drum C is a awl, B. which acted u on bv the s rinw S is messed a aiust and acts in connection with the ratchetv 1 .1 P a a l a wheel P. When the drum F is slipped on to the reel No; 2 reel No. 1 is made complete. The reel rests on uprights D D secured to bed-plate E. Around drum F passes a cord, L, moving over a pulley, at the ceiling of the room; the other end carrying a weight, W. A movable crank, H, serves to wind up the weights from time to time. The weights, acting-upon the drum F by the cord L, give tension to the paper being wound upon the drum B, and rewind it as fast as it is relieved from the register A. When the reel of paper has been run through once and reel No. 1 is full, it is taken out of the stand D E, the drum F slipped oil and put on to reel No. 2, now empty. Reel No. Q is converted into No. 1, and so on. Thus, having changed places, the paper again runs through the register and is rewound. Reel No. 2 has a spring, U, with roller, Y. The latter, pressing against the edges of the reel B C, keeps the paper between reel No. 2 and the register of moderate tension as it is unwound. Reel No. 1 has a light segment of metal, V, attached to the base E of its stand, carrying a roller, Z, which serves to guide the paper as it comes to the reel. The telegraph operator reads the messages between the register and reel No. 1. The tension produced by the weights W is simply sutiicient to keep the paper reeled up, and does not prevent readily drawing it back when necessary to re-read any part of the message which may be on the portion of paper reeled up. i
Having thus described my improved paper-reel for telegraph registers, so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, 1 will now proceed to state what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, to wit:
I claim the reels B C, adjustable drum F, with ratchet P, pawl R,Vand spring S, with cord L and weight W, for the purpose hereinspecified and set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th day of September, A. D. 1865.
