The object of the invention isto provide a registering instrument which shall be simple in construction, efficient in operation, and adapted to be employed on a paper-folding machine in which the folding-rollers are dis- 7 posed parallel with the paper-delivering tapes or in. which the paper is moved laterally after it has been alined by the registering instrument and which instrument shall permit said lateral movement without danger'of tearing 7 the paper or throwing it out of alinement or register; and to that end the invention consists, mainly, of a registering instrument normally disposed toregister the paper traversing said instrument andsustained yieldingly. to the subsequent draft of the paper laterally from its aforesaid movement; and the invention also consists in certain novel features of the details of its construction and auxiliary devices connected therewith, as hereinafter described and claimed.

My present invention is designed for registering paper on paper-folding machines in which the folding-rollers B B are arranged parallel with'the tapes ct a, as shown in Fig.
1 of the drawings, or on other machines hav-' ing paper-conveyers delivering thepaper in onev direction on said machine and means for removingthe delivered paper from said, conveyers laterally or at right angles from the aforesaid direction. 7 I I The purpose of the invention is to register the paper on the tapes or conveyers and to allow the paper to be subsequently drawn laterally or at right angles from said tapes or conveyors without causing the registering instrument to either injure the paper or throw it out of register or alinement, as hereinbefore stated.
My present invention is susceptible of modifications of its details. The essential feature, however, is a suitable support which allows the registering instrument to yield'laterally from its registering position, as aforesaid. For this purpose I prefer to pivotthe registering instrument to its support in such a manner as to allow it to swing toward and from tho folding-rollers B B and provide said support with a suitable stop. to arrest the swinging movement of the registering instrument at its registering position and means for normally holding said instrument in contact with said stop. My present invention shows said feature embodied in the following structure of the instrument and auxiliary devices employed in connection therewith.
A rock-shaft F extends across the machine and is mounted in hearings on posts E, se-
cured to the sides of the frame A. A lever F is fastened to the end of said shaft and has its free end held in contact with a rotary cam F which imparts intermittently-oscillatory motion to said lever.
Over opposite sides of the folding-blade O are rock-arms b l), which are adjustably secured to the rock-shaft to allow said arms to be adjusted so as to carry the registering instrument in proper positions to engage the registering slits or perforations in the paper.
The registering instruments are carried on the free ends of the rock-arms b b, and in order to allow said instruments to be carried a greater or less distance from the rock-shaft, according to the distance of the aforesaid slits or perforations from the advance edge of the paper, I make each of the arms 1) adjust-able in length preferably by forming said arm of two end sections spliced together by means of a sleeve 0, embracing the adjacent end portions of said sections and adjustably clamped thereon by set-screws c c. The free end of the arm I) is formed with a bracket consisting of a longitudinal extension I) of the arm and a branch (1 extending, preferably, upward from said extension. Said extension and branch are provided with screw-threaded eyes d d, which are axially in line with each other. In said eyes are inserted verticallyadjustable screws d formed at their adjacent ends with pivot-poin ts which sustain between them a hub e of an arm 6, extending downward and approximatelyto the plane of the tapes (1 ct and constituting the registering instrument proper. Said instrument is thus pivoted to swing in a horizontal plane toward and from the folding-rollers B B.
In order to normally sustain the registering instrument in position to register the paper traversing said instrument, I provide the arm I) with a supplemental arm f, extending from the free end of the arm I) and having connected to it an adjustable set-screw j", which constitutes the stop for arresting the swinging movement of the registering-arm e at its requisite registering position. To normally sustain the registering-arm e in said position, a suitable spring f is arranged to hold the arm 6 in contact with the set-screwf.
To allow the springf to be adjusted in its tension, I prefer to attach it to a collar g, which is adjustably clamped on a hub g on the extension of the arm Z) by means of asetscrew 1 as more clearly shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings.
To the lower or free end of the registeringarm e is attached the registering point or tongue 6 for entering into the slit made in the paper for' that purpose. Beneath this registering-point is arranged a friction-pad 71, preferably composed of leather. This pad is disposed with its top even or approximately even with the plane of the tapes (L a and is rigidly mounted on a plate It, secured to a slide 702, which is supported in alongitudinal guide 1', arranged parallel with the tapes (to. Said guide is secured at one end to the frame A and at its opposite end to a stationary cross-bar '1" and is adjustable laterally thereon to harmonize the position of the guide with the lateral adjustment of the arm I), which carries the registering instrument.
The front stop D is carried at proper intervals to and from its paper-arresting position preferably by mechanisms similar to those shown in my Letters PatentNo. 567,564, dated September 8, 1896, and consists of a rock-shaft G, receiving intermittent motion from a lever G, attached thereto and actuated by a rotary cam II. An arm I, depending from said shaftand fastened thereto, is connected at its lower end to the outer end of a horizontallongitudinal plate I, which is supported at its inner end upon a roller R, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Through a nut N, fastened to the bar I, passes a screw 0, which also passes through a nut D, secured to the front stop D, which rides on the bar I. To the outer end of the screw is fastened a worm-gear P, secured to a horizontal shaft it, which extends across the machine and is journaled in armsk, projecting from the nuts N of the two screws 0, which adjustably sustain the front stopD on thetwo bars I. (Shownin Fig. 101 the drawings.) A hand-wheel L or other suitable device is attached to the end of the shaft 7c for turning the same, and thereby turning the screw 0 to adjust the front stop to its required position on its supporting-bars I, according to the size of the sheets of paper fed to the machine.
The registering point or tongue 6' projects from the arm 0 rearward or to the paper-receiving end of the machine, and back of said point or tongue and in proximity thereto is the bridge I, which serves to open the slit in the paper and facilitates the entrance of the point or tongue into said slit. This bridge is preferably formed of a thin metal plate which is adjustably secured to the guide i by means of a downward side extension Z of the bridge, fastened to a block 1), which is provided with a dovetail tongue 11', inserted into a correspondingly-shaped longitudinal groove sin the side of the guide "i as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. By means of aspringt, interposed between the tongue p and inner face of the groove 8, the block 1), with the bridge 1 secured thereto, is held in its desired position. The described connection of the block p to the guide 71 permits the bridge to be adjusted in its position in relation to the registering point or tongue 6 Each of the two slides 7L2, which carry the pads h, is adjustably connected to the front stop D by a screw mprojecting from a plate 0, fastened to the under side of the slide. Said screw passes through a longitudinal slot 0 in the slide 77.2 and through a plate n, mounted on top of the slide and provided with an upward-projecting tongue t, which engages a notch in the-under side of the front stop D and is thus interlocked therewith, so as to cause the slide 71 to move in unison with the front stop.
- The operation of my'invention is as follows: The paperis carried into the machine by the tapes a a in the usual manner. In the meantime the registering instruments are elevated to allow the paper to freely pass under them, and the front stop is in its rear most position to arrest the movement of the paper in time to place it in position to be folded. As soon as the paper has been arrested by the front stop the registering-arms b b descend and cause the registering points or tongues e to press the paper down upon the pads h h, so as to produce a frictional hold thereon. Then the front stop D moves forward and draws along with it the aforesaid pads, which by their frictional hold upon the paper carry said paper forward, and in this movement the points or tongues (a enter the slits. inthe paper, and in passing under the paper the vertical shanks'e of said points are brought in contact with the rear edges of the slits, and thereby arrest the movement of the paper. The points 6 with their shanks are formed of very thin sheet metal, so that when the edges of the slits come in contact with the shanks 6 as aforesaid, the entire bottoms of the points 6 are removed from the top of the paper, and thus relieves the paper from the downward pressure of said points and from the forward propelling force of the pads, and therefore obviates excessivestrainiug the 'slitted portion of the paper, which is then left in its registering position. The blade 0 then tucks the paper into the bite of the folding-rollers, and in this operation the registering-arms e yield laterally to the draft of the paper and allow the same to pass through the foldingrollers without danger of causing the registering points or tongues to tear the paper or throwing it out of register.
It will be observed that by supporting the registering instruments by means of the pivots formed on the screws d which pass through the screw-threaded eyes d in the supporting-bracket and can be turned to raise or lower the intervening hub e of the registering instrument, said instrument can be adjusted to bear with the desired force upon the paper to be registered.
The registering-point e 1 prefer to provide with a heel e, to more effectually guard against the tearing of the paper during its lateral movement from the tapes.
That I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination with paper-delivering tapes and means for removing the delivered paper laterally from said tapes, an instrument sustained yieldingly toward the afore said paper-removing means, a stop arresting the movement of said instrument inposition to register the paper delivered by the tapes, and means for yieldingly holding the instrument in contact with said stop.
2. In combination with paperdelivering tapes and paper-folding rollers parallel with said tapes, a supporting-bracket over the tapes, an arm pivoted to said bracket to swing in a horizontal plane toward and from the folding-rollers and provided with means for engaging and registering the paper, a stop on said bracket arresting the movement of said arm at its registering position, and a spring holding said arm in contact with the aforesaid stop.

In combination'with paper-delivering tapes and means for removing the delivered paper laterally from said tapes, a bracket over the tapes and provided with pivots disposed one above the other, an arm sustained by and between said pivots and provided with means for engaging a slit or perforation in the paper, a stop on said bracket arresting the swinging movement of said pivoted arm in position to register the paper, and a spring holding said arm in contact with the stop as set forth.

In combination with paper-folding rollers. and paper-delivering tapes disposed parallel with said rollers, a registering instrument comprising a supporting-arm provided with two screw-threaded eyes disposed one above the other and axially in line, verticallyadjustable screws passing through said eyes and provided with pivot-points ontheir adjacent ends, a hub pivoted on said screws, a registering-arm extending from said hub toward the plane of the delivered paper, a stop on the aforesaid supporting-arm arresting the swinging movement of the registering-arm at its registering position, and a spring attached to the said supporting-arm and yieldingly holding the registering-arm in contact with the aforesaid stop as set forth.
5. An automatic point-feed registering instrument consisting of a supporting-arm adjustable in length, a registering-arm pivoted to said supporting-arm and vertically adj ustable thereon, a stop on the supporting-arm limiting the swinging movement of the registering-arm and means for yieldingly holding the registering-arm in contact with said stop as set forth.
6. In combination with paper-delivering tapes, a rock-shaft over said tapes, an arm receiving oscillatory motion from said shaft and a registering-arm pivoted to said oscillatory arm as set forth.
7. On a paper-folding machine having the paper-delivering tapes parallel with the paperfolding rollers,the combination of a rock-shaft over said tapes, an arm receiving oscillatory motion from said shaft, a registering-arm pivoted to said oscillatory arm to swing to IIO ward the folding-rollers and normally in position to register the paper delivered upon the aforesaid tapes, a stop sustaining the oscillatory arm in its normal position and a spring yieldingly retaining said arm in contact with the stop as set forth.
8. In combination with paper-folding rollers,- paper-delivering tapes parallel with said rollers, and alternately advancing and receding front stop, pads at opposite sides of the folding-rollers and in a plane even with that of the aforesaid tapes and connected to the aforesaid front stop to move therewith,a rockshaft disposed transversely over the tapes, rock-arms extending from said shaft, registering arms connected to said rock -arms yieldingly toward the folding-rollers, and disposed over the aforesaid pads, stops on the rock-arms arresting the swinging of the registering-arms at their registering positions, and springs connected to the oscillatory arms and yieldingly holding the registering-arms in contact with the aforesaid stops as set forth.
9. In combination withpaper-folding rollers and paper-delivering tapes parallel with said rollers, pads at opposite sides of the folding-rollers and in the same plane with the tapes, registering-arms over the pads and supported yieldingly toward the folding-rollers, registering-points attached to said arms, and bridges facing said registering-points to open the slits in the paper preparatory to the entering of the registering-points as set forth.
10. In combination with paper-folding rollers, paper-delivering tapes parallel with said rollers, and an alternatelyadvaneing and receding front stop, pads at opposite sides of the folding-rollers and supported in the same plane with the aforesaid tapes, slides connecting said pads to the front stop, register- .ing-arms over the pads and supported yieldingly toward the folding-rollers, registeringpoints attached to said arms, and bridges facing said registering-points to open the slits in the paper for the entering of the registering-points as set forth.
11. In combination with the registeringarm provided with a registering-point and an alternately advancing and receding front stop temporarily arresting the movement of the paper under said registering-arm, a stationary guide disposed parallel with the tapes, a slide in said guide provided with a longitudinal slot, a plate mounted on said slide and connected to the front stop, a bolt passing through the slot of the slide and adjustably securing the aforesaid plate to said slide, a pad attached to the opposite end of the slide and disposed under the aforesaid registeringarm and a slit-opening bridge attached to the aforesaid guide as set forth.
12. In combination with the paper-delivering tapes, and adjustable front stop, a rockshaft transversely over said tapes, a longitudinally-adjustable rockarm extending from said rock-shaft, a vertically-adjustable registe'ring-arm carried on' said rock-arm and provided with a registering-point, a stationary longitudinal guide, a slide in said guide TALBOT C.
