TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME l Beit known that I, ."AMns A. OLNEY, of North Providence, in the county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have made a new and useful Invention of a Machine for Making Cop or other Tubes of Paper, or any Suitable substitute therefor, capable of being converted into a tube by such machine; and I do hereby declare the said invention to be fully described in thefollowing specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which?- Figure l is atop view of it.

In the drawings,A,denotes the frame of the machine, it being provided with a driving-shaft, B, suitably sustained in boxes a a. An endless belt, B2, works around a pulley, C, fixed on the drving-sl1aftg such belt also goes around anotherv and smaller pulley D, arranged within a standard, E, as represented in the drawings. The lower part of the pulley C isl placed within a trough, F, which is to contain a liquid paste or cement. An elastic presser, G, fixed to and arranged between parallel guides b Zz, erected on the upper or horizontal surface of .the standard E, is .arranged over the endless belt in manner as shown in fig. 3. A uted roller, H, operates in connection with the endless belt, and is arranged overand upon an arbor, c, projecting from a lever, L.v The luted roller revolves freely on the arbor, on which there is also a discharger or tube, K, (see Figure 4, which is a longitudinal section of the arbor, the roller, and dischargen) which slides lengthwise on the arbor, and has ah arm, d, which extends down from it and through an eye in the longer arm of a lever, l, arranged as represented.
t F01' the purpose of moving the said lever so as to slide the discharger toward and over the grooved roller at the proper time or times, there should be one or more cams e projecting from one side of the pulley C. A spring, f, Serves to move the leverin the opposite direction. A spring, g, arranged on a bracket, 7L, projecting from the post z' by which the fulcrunl t of the lever L is supported, serves'to move the said lever in one direction, that is so as to elevate its front arm in order to eiect the raising of the grooved roller and the discharger at the proper times. A cam, M, iixed on the driving-shaft, operates to elfect the counter-movement of the lever L. 4A small feed-wheel, N, to revolve freely on an arbor, c, projecting from, the lever L, and to extend down through a slot, Z', made in the elastic presser G, may be used to advantage in connection with the endless belt in feeding the strip of paper to the winding roller H. A pair of scissors or shears, O, has one blade xed on the top of the standard E, the other blade being movable on a fulcrum, m. The two Shanks or arms n o of the bladesare connected by a closing spring, p. A lever, P, provided with a projection, p2, to -act against the curved part q of the shnnkof the movable blade of the scissors, has its fulcrum supported on or by a post, r. The shorter arm of such lever is arranged against the side of a cam-wheel, s, fixed on the driving-shaft. Furthermore, there areapplied to the pasting and feeding belt B a spring scraper, t, and a forked tightcner, u, they being arranged as represented. The tightener is hinged to the base of the frame so as to be movable up to the belt, in order to tighten it more or less on its supporting wheels. The tightener also embraces and touches against the two opposite edges of the belt, and serves to scrape from them any surplus paste. The scrapertis to remove the surplus paste from the outer surface of the belt.
In operating with the said machine, a slip of paper of the requisite width is fed from a roller to be run between the presser and the endless belt and to the tinted roller, the said lbelt being in motion so as to move the strip along toward the roller, and also put the roller in revolution on its arbor.. The lower surface of the strip of paper by contact with the upper surface of the endless belt will be pasted or sized thereby. As the strip may advance it will be wound several times about the uted roller, so as to cause the pasted surface of the strip to be rolled into contact with the unpasted side of it. Next the iiuted roller should be raised above the scissors and between their blades, after which the movableblade of such scissors should close upon the stationary one' so as to separate the wound portion from the rest ofthe strip of paper. Directly after this the discharger should be raised against the tube so to force it off the luted roller. Next the discharger should be retracted and theluted roller should again descend between the blades of the scissors and upon the strip of paper, which 0n being moved forward will be again wound upon the'roller. In this 4manner the tubes may be successively formed by and discharged from the machine. The presser serves three purposes, viz, to press the paper down upon the pasted surface of the endless belt, to guide the strip to the winding or Hated roller, and to prevent the Strip from coming in contact with the under side of and adhering to the stationary blade of the scissors.
I claim the combination as well ns the arrangement' of the endless pasting and covering belt B, the trough F, the presser G, the ilnted roller H, the disehnrger K, and the scissors O, the said belt, scissors, roller, 'and discharger being provided with mechanism for operating them, substantially as described. v
