Description

\\\\ Wn *ra'rns JOSEPH S. DIKEMAN, OF TORRINGTON, CONNEOTICUT.
SEAT-POST BINDER.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,766, dated August 14, 1900` Application filed May 19, 1899. Serial No. 717,437. (No model.)
To all witam it maty oonccrn:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH S. DIKEMAN, a resident of Torrington, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat- Post Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in seat-post binders for bicycles and the like, the object of the invention being to provide a device of the above-mentioned Character which will be extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, easy to operate, and most effectual when in use.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in section, illustrating my improvements; and Figs. 2 and 3 are views of details.
A represents a portion of the frame-of an ordinary bicycle, and B a coupling connecting the tubes of the frame together. The coupling B is provided With an internal annular shoulder l between its ends, on which the lower section 2 of my improved lookingtube is disposed. The lower edge of the section 2 is provided with a recess 4, in which a screw or pin 5, passing through the coupling B, is disposed, so as to prevent revoluble movement of said section 2. The lookingtube comprises two sections 2 and 8, one above the other and having their meeting edgesbeveled 01' inclined. The sections 2 and 3 are preferably made from a tube cut diagonally, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The interior diameter of the coupling B is slightly greater than the exterior diameter of the sections 2 and 3 to permit of a slightlylateral movement of said sections, as will be more fully hereinafter explained.
The upper end of the couplingB is provided with internal screw-threads to mesh with external screW-threads on a nut or ring 6. The nut or ring 6 is made'with oppositely-disposed sockets 7 to receive a suitable tool for turning the same, 01' it may be made angular for the reception of a wrench or other tool. The internal diameter of the ring 6 is approximately the same as the internal diameter of the looking-tube Sections and bears upon the upper end of the upper section 3.
The saddle-post 8 is passed through the nut or ring 6 and the sections of the looking-tube and the nut or ring is then sorewed. down. As the nut or ring moves downward it will force the upper section 3 of the looking-tube to one side and the lower section 2 to the opposite side, due to the inclined bearing edges of said sections, and hence bind tightly against the saddle-post and secure the same against Vertical movement, while the screw 5 in the recess in the lower section 2 of the locking-tube will prevent any revoluble movement of the tube and post.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of myinvention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and altera-tions as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a seat-post binder, the combination with a tubular section having an internal annular shoulder, and a seat-post entering said tubular section, of two sleeves located one upon the other and disposed loosely within the tubular section so as to embrace the seat-post, the lower sleeve resting on said annular shoulder in the tubular section, the lower sleeve having a single transversely-beveled upper edge and the upper sleeve having a single transversely-beveled lower edge resting upon the beveled upper end of the lower sectionand a nut or ring threaded into the upper end of the tubular section and bearing upon the upper sleeve so as to exert a pressure thereon and cause said sleevesto be displaced laterally in opposite directions and tightly embrace the seat-post throughout the length of the two sleeves.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two Subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH S. DIKEMAN.
