FOUNTAIN PEN FILLER. (Application filed. 1m. 18, 1900.)
(No Model.)
'JNVEA/JOR BY Afforrwy M m M m w m m W O m UNrrsD STAT Es I PATENT OFFICE-t .WILLIAM WOODS ROBBINS, OF BROWNSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOUNTAIN-PEN FlLLERl.
s'rncrFIcAmoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,517, dated August 7, 1900'. Application filed March 18, 1900. Serial No. 8,490. (No model.)
' T0 ctZZ whom, it may conccrrt:
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM WOODS ROB- BINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fountain-pen fillers, and es pecially to an attachment to the barrel of the penholder and adapted to be carried with the pen, so that the filler may at all times be at hand ready for use.
More specifically the present invention consists in the provision of an externally-threaded plug which is designed to screw into the barrel of a fountain-penholder and to carry a filling-tube which is secured to and removable with said plug when it is desired to utilize the filler to replenish the supply of ink in the barrel of the penholder.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view through a portion of a fountain-pemshowing my improved filling attachment secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail View showing the parts disassembled. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a slight modification.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the barrel of the fountain-pen, of the usual construction, and one end of said barrel is externally threaded, as at A, and B is a cap provided with internally disposed threads B,
which threads are adapted to engage with the threads A when the cap is screwed on said barrel. L l
The filler which forms the subject-matter of the present invention comprises the plug D, having left threads D about its circum ference. The barrel of the fountain-pen has internal left threads a, which are engaged by the left threads D when said plug is screwed into the end of the barrel, in which position said plug is carried when not in use.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the plug as having a flange D which is the preferred form of plug. Said flange is formed about the middle portion of the plug and is of a diameter equal to the diameter of the barrel A. circumference of said plug below the flange is provided with left threads adapted to screw into the threads in the bore of the barrel portion of the penholder, while that portion of thecircumferenceof the plug above the flange is .provided with right threads, and the interior right threads of the cap B screw over said right threads, and when the cap is screwed down to its lowest limit the lower end thereof will rest against the upper edge of the flange and the outer circumference of the cap will be flush with the circumference of said flange. When the plug, with the flange D is screwed into the barrel portion of the penholder, the under face of said flange will rest upon the top of said barrel and the circumference of the two will be flush with each other as well as with the circumference of the cap. Said plug is centrally apertured to receive the filling-tube E, made of glass or other suitable material, said tube being securely fastened to the plug, which is removed with the tube when it is desired to use the filler. E, while its other end is brought to a point and is substantially similar to ordinary filling-tubes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fountain-pen filler, comprising the barrel portion, having interior left threads, com bined with a plug having an annular flange about its middle portion, the circumference of On one end of said tube is a bulb The said plug below the flange being left threaded, to screw into said barrel, and the portion of the circumference above the flange having right threads, a filling-tube secured in an aperture in said plug and removable therewith, the interiorly-right-threaded cap,
adapted to be screwed about the plug above said flange, the circumference of the latter when adjusted as described, being flush with the circumference of the cap and barrel por- 10 tion, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM l/VOODS ROBBINS.
