Be it known that I, CoMEGY's C. LUsB'Y, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handpieces, whereof the fol-l lowing is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to chuck devices arranged upon the extremity of a flexible ro-` tary shaft and to detachably clamp a drill or similar instrument, so as to rotate the same in the hand of the operator. Vhen such devices are used in dental surgery, the interior working parts become charged with bacteria and are a source of contamination to the instruments which are successively inserted therein.
It is one of the objects of my invention to provide a handpiece peculiarly adapted for the use aforesaid in'that the interior working parts are readily accessible even to an unskilled operator and may be conveniently separated for sterilization.
My invention comprises a tubular spindle composed of separable members, clamping mechanism mounted in said spindle and arranged to be readily detached therefrom, and other details of construction hereinafter more definitely specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a convenient form of my invention, the parts being in position to clamp the instrument inserted therein. Figs. 2 and 3 are top plan views of the respective telescoping members of the spindle shown in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is aside elevation of the adjustable plunger shown in Fig. l. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are cross-sectional views taken, respectively, on the lines 5 5, 6 6, and '7 7 shown in Fig. l.
The exterior casing of the handpiece comprises a front member A and a rear member A', said two parts 'being in threaded engagement with the sleeve A2, respectively, at a and d'. The hollow spindle in which the instrument is clamped is composed of the telescoping members C and'O and is mounted for rotation in the cone-bearing a2 of the casing member A and in the sleeve A2. In order to secure the spindle against longitudinal displacement, the rearward extremity c thereof, which entends through the sleeve A2, is of reduced diameter, the shoulder c being provided with the washer c2 to bear against the front face of said sleeve A2, and the splined collar c3 is' presented against the rear face of said sleeve by means of the nut cY1 in threaded engagement with said eXtrem-r ity c of the spindle. The front member C of said spindle ts within the body portion C thereof and is secured against rotation therein by the engagement of vthe lug c5 in the recess ce. Within the member C of said spindle is mounted the resilient split tubular chuck D, which bears at its forward end upon the cone-bearing c7 in the spindle member C and is engaged at its rear extremity in the hollow conical endvc of the plunger E. Said plunger E is provided with a rear extension e', longitudinally adjustable in threaded engagement therewith, whereby the effective length of said plunger may be varied to compensate for wear of the parts, dsc.
The rear extremity of the spindle member C' is notched at c to register with the slot o8 in the body C, and the clamping-lever F being entered in said slot and notch with its trunnionsfin the truunion-seats cX of both of said spindle members serves to secure the same against relative longitudinal displacement. The arm f of said lever F bears upon the extension es of the plunger E, and the latter is so adjusted that the arm f2 of said lever is normally projected beyond the circumference of the spindle.
Vithin the casing A and surrounding the clamping-lever F is a slidable sleeve G, in which the bearing-ring g is mounted for free rotation between the shoulders g and g2. The sleeve G may be grasped through the openings a3 in the casing member A, and to facilitate its manipulation its outer circumference is ridged, as indicated at g3.
The operation of the device is as follows: The sleeve G being in its forward position, the chuck D is permitted to expand, thrusting the plunger E rearwardly against the arm f/ of the lever F and projecting the arm f2 of the latter outwardly from the slot cs. The instrument X is inserted,with the parts in the position aforesaid, and the sleeve G is grasped through the openings a3 and drawn rearwardly, whereupon the bearing-ring g in said sleeve riding over the arm f2 of the 1ever F thrusts the arm f of said lever against the extension e' of the plunger E-and compresses the chuck D between the conical end e of the plunger E and the conical seat cT in the spindle member O, thus clamping lthe instrument X securely with respect to the spindle. With the parts in the clamped position described the spindle C, together with the tool X, tbc., may be rotated in its bearings in the casing A by means of the shaft B, upon which it is secured, the bearing-ring g being rotated with said spindle between the shoulders g and g2 in the sleeve G. The latter remaining stationary in I(he casing A prevents accidental return of the parts to the released position. To release the instrument X, the sleeve G is grasped through the ope-nings a3 and thrust forward, whereupon the resilient chuck D is permitted to expand, as aforesaid, and the instrument may be freely Withdrawn.
When it is desired to remove the internal Working parts of the handpiece for any purpose, such as the sterilization hereinbefore referred to, the front casing member C is unscrewed from its connection with the sleeve A2, carrying with it the sleeve G. 'lhe lever F thus uncovered may be lifted from the slot o8, and the spindle parts C C',which, as above noted, are relativelysecu red by the trunuions f of the lever F, are thus disengaged. The spindle member C being thereupon Withdrawn from the spindle-body C, the plunger E and chuck D may be shaken from said member C. working parts which may be charged with bacteria are thus readily accessible without the employment of skilled labor-to manipulate them.
For the purpose of dismantling and assembling the parts as aforesaid the casing-sleeve A2 maybe considered -as a fixture with respect to the casing member A', being secured therein by the set-screw a4. It is to be noted,
however, that said set-screw bears upon a smooth cylindrical portion aof said sleeve and that the relative longitudinal position of said sleeve A2 in the casing member A may be adjusted so that as the spindle C wears in its bearings the front casing member A may be screwed farther upon the sleeve A2 It is to be noted that all ot the.
to bring the cone-bearing a2 in the forward end of the casing in proper relation with the forward end of said spindle. Wear of the spindle in t-he sleeve A2 may of course be compensated for by longitudinal adjustment of the,col1ar c3 and nut c4.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction which I have shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claiml. In a handpiece, the combination with an outer casing,of a tubular spindle mount-ed for rotation in said casing, and comprising separable members, a chuclmounted in said spindle, and a lever, seated in said spindle to detachably secure the members thereof in relatively-fixed position, and arranged to operate said chuck, substantially as set forth.
2. In a handpiece, the combination with an outer casing, of a tubular spindle mounted for rotation in said casing, and comprising separable telescoping members, means to prevent relative rotation of said separable spindle members, and detachable means, distinct from said spindle members, to prevent relative longitudinal move-ment thereof, subs-tantially as set forth.

In a handpiece, thev combination with an A outer casing, of a tubular spindle mounted for rotation in said casing, mechanism to clamp an instrument in said spindle.; comprising a lever mounted to rotate with said spindle, a ring g, arranged to encircle said spindle and said lever, and to rotate there'V with, and a normally-stationary sleeve G, mounted to slide within said casing in operative relation with said ring, su bstantially as set forth.
4. In a handpiece, the combination with a tubular spindle, of a sleeve A2,'in which said spindle is journaled, an exterior casing, com` prising separable members A, A', respec tively in adjustable relation with said sleeve, and means to adjust and secure said cas-ing members with respect to said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
