FRANK D.- ALLEN, OF STONECLIFF, VEST VIRGINIA.
'CHARetNe-a i f SPECIFICATION forming part Letters patentino. 655,179, dated August 7, 1900.
Appntttitn ma May e, 1900.1
To @ZZ whom/.it may concern: Be it known that I, FRANK D. ALLEN, residing at Stonecli, in the county of Fayette and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Charging-Car, of which the following is a specification. Y This invention is in the nature of improvements in charging-cars for `coke-ovens; and it primarily has for its objectvto provide a car of this character of a simple and economical construction which can be easily manipulated and which will eifectively serve for its intended purposes. Another and essential object of `my invention is to provide an improvedstructure' of charging-car including a revolving hopper supported upon the truck in such manner as to permit discharging the coal on the other side of the car without turning the entire car about, as is generally necessary in the ordinary types of charging-cars of this lin'd.
With these objects in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and peculiar combination of parts, all of which will hereinafter be fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-A i I Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved charging-car. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, the hopper being shown set to discharge at one side in full lines and to dischargeat the other side in dotted lines. Fig.' 3 is a view of the truck, the hopper supporting the ring being shown in position in dotted lines. Fig.` 4t isn a detail view of the central bearing or turnpost.
In the practical construction my improved charging-car includes generally a truck 'A and a hopper B, rotatably mounted .upon the truck, the special manner in which the said hopper is mounted upon and connectswith the truck forming an essential feature of my invention. i
The truck A comprises the wheeled axles 1 1, the longitudinallyextending beams 2, mounted thereon, and the transverse beams 3, held in the plane with the beams 2.
The trucks A in practice are propelled upon the trackway in any suitable manner; but for readily bringing the same into proper poL truck, as shown.
serai No.y 16,087. (No motti.)
which it will be noticed the said frame 6 has a pair of standards 6b, that straddle a flywheel 7, mounted upon the shaft 5, said standards 6b also having bearings at their upper end for 'the double crank-shaft 8, which shaft 'carries a chain-wheel 8a, geared by the chainbelt `9 with a double chain-wheel 5, mounted on the shaft 5, which wheel 5 receives motionfrom the chain 10, that connects it with a chain-wheel 11 upon the front axle of the By providing the truck with a drive 'mechanism as described the operator or operators mounted on the truck can i.
'readily'propel the same forward or backward, as desired. s
The truck-frame A also includes in my invention a pair of cross-beams 12, that extend diagonally from one cross-beam 3 to the other, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the ends of the said beams 12 being suitably braced by angleplates 12a.f Mounted upon and made fast to the crossing portions of the beams 112 is a casting 13, having a central vertically-extending' hub land an upwardly-projecting stud or spindle 13". u i
the beams-12, each having a tread or bearingshoe portion 14a and an overhanging guidepulleynllc, the purpose of which will hereinafter appear.
B designates the hopper, which in my form of'car has its bottom inclined transversely from one side to the other, its lower or discharging mouth projecting to one side of the car-truck and having connected therewith a chute member 16, and while I have not illustrated it said month may also be equipped with a gate or cut-off of any approved construction. The mouth and the chute portions are so projected and held relatively to the `truck that they will clear all parts thereof when the hopper is rotated upon its supports. The liopperwis centrally supported upon a metal bracket 17, secured to the bottom of 14 14 indicateguide-brackets mounted upon IOO ' thereof. By this cons-truction it is manifestly I the truck about, as in my improvement the but, so far as I know, the connections for join-- v have been more or less complex.
- mechanism or adjustment of any of its parts.
.20a wifll'seat upon the-treadA portions of the the hopper, and having a pendent hubportion 18, that fits over the spindle 13b of the casting 13, its lower end resting upon the hub 1,3a of the said casting 13, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. This central bearing for the hopper serves as a sectional'turn-post and also takes up some of the Weight vof the hopper, the bulkf of which, however, is transmitted to the truck by a series of combined braces andsupportingrods 19, having substantially the same length and each being secured at the upper end to the upper member of the hopper and. at the lower end to the casting or lringnwiem';` ber 20, 'having an annular horizontal flange 204. when fitted in a forwardY position the flange brackets 141 and rideunder the guid e-pulleys clear that the-bulk of the-Weight .ofthe hopper will lbe transmitted 'over a largeareaof theftruck-frame and in such manner thatlthe weight will be" properly balanced to permit of a free turning around of the hopper.
A chargingcar constructed in the manner shown and described provides for charging the ovens without the necessity of employing switch-outs or track-laterals, &c., to bring hopper can be readily turned .to discharge at either side of the truck without turning the truck around. v
I am aware that dumping-cars have heretoforefbeen providedv in which the hopper discharges-tothe side'and in which the hopper hasbeen rotatably supported uponthe truck;
ing hoppers-of the kind stated with thetruck Myinventiondi-erentiates from What has heretofore beenvfprovided in .this type of charging or dumping meansin that the central bearing constructionissimplified, and byreason of the manner in which the hopper is supported upon its annular ring the weight of thesame is so balanced that the hopper can bereadily turned around without any special releasing Having-thus described myinvention, what This ring 2O is of such diameter that?" I claim, and desire to secure by Lette-rs Patent, is*
la hub pendently project-ed from the bottom of the hopper, vsaid hub being rotatably mountedupon the turn-post, and means for bracing the hopper-body upon the car-truck, said means being rotatable Withthe hopper as specified. Y
' 2. In a du mpi'ng-car, the combination with 'fthe Wheeled truck, the central turn-post xed-ly connected thereto, and a series of guide- =ilanges disposed iny an annular arrangement about the turn-post; of the hopper, said hopper having itsbottominclined andproject'ed to'- discharge to the sideof the truck5azpend-v ent hub projected down from the bottom to fit upon the`turn-post, a series of stayirods secured pendently to the hopper, and an annular flange supportedf'romv thelower endl of the stay-rods, said iiange engaging the Xd edly-held annularly-disposed guides secured upon the truck substantially as shown` and for the purposes described.
8. In a vdumping-car of the character deA scribed, the combination with the' wheeled truck-frame, said frame-including the crossed beams 12, and the guides 14, saidguide'shavper having its discharge-bottom inclined to f project from theV side of the truckthe brach `ets 17-secured on the h-opper-bottom said casting having anaperturedA hu-b 18, Aadapted to' fit the spindle 13", the bars 19,an;d the ring 20, said ring having an annular' flange adapted to engage the guides 14, all being arranged substantially as shown purposes described. l A FRANK D'. ALLEN.
