- i SPECIFICATION formngpart of Letters Patent No. 654,886, dated July 31, 1900. Application tiled J 116 13, 1898. Serial No. 683,275; (No modem To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALFRED Passoni., of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefulIxnprovements in Tufted Upholstering; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref erence being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon, which. forma partof t-his specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction in tufted or plaited up'holstering.
yThe invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in' the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectionoi' a cushion made in accordance with my invention, said section being taken through the points at which the out-er covering is tufted to the backing. Fig. 2 is asimilar section taken between said tufting-points.V Fig. 3 is a bottoni plan view, broken away, showing the construction of the cushion. Fig. I is an enlarged detail section taken through one of the tufting-points- Fig. 5 is la bottom plan View of one of the {Lifting-buttons. Fig. G is a side elevation of another form offtufting-button.
In said drawings, A designates the outer flexible covering, and l2 designates a backing or foundation which is made of the full size of the cushion andinade of strawboard, canvas, or the like, as preferred.`V
C designates the filling materal, of curled hair or the like, which is placed between said outer covering and backing and arranged in bunches which occupy the severalcells formed between the points at which the covering and backing-are'attaehed to each other, and D designates the tnft-ing devices which are inserted through said covering and through the backingor foundation and which hold the two parts of the cushion together at the tufting-points.
E designates a washer which is slipped over the tufting device outside of the backing B and located between an' enlarged or folded part of said device and the backing. The tnfting device shown in Figs. l, 3, and i consists of a button D', provided with api-urality of prongs d, `which nass through a central opening in said washer, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and are bent or folded at their outer ends to overlie the outer surface of said washer. V
F F designate a plurality of retainingpieces, made of cardboard or like rigid material and made of a shape corresponding to about that of the lower or foundation sides of the cells formed between the tufting-points. One of said retaining-pieces is inserted between the backing B and the filling of each cell. Said washer E is made of such diameteras to extend radially outside of or overlap the proximate corners of said retaining-pieces. As herein shown, th'c prongs are four in number and are arranged diagonally with respect to the line passing between two adjacent cells. Said prongs are made of such length as to each overlap one corner of an adjacent retaining-piece and may bc made sufficiently rigid to hold said retaining-pieces in place without the interposition of the Washers. In this event-four prongs for each device are employed. I prefer, however, to use the washers,
as said washers serve to more securely hold or confine the retaining-pieces at Vthe corners of the same whether the tufting devices have one, two, three, or four prongs.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a'fastening eonsisting of two parts G G', both provided with Shanks g g', of which the shank g ismade tubular, and the shank g' is adapted lto be inserted therein `and is constructed so that it will be expanded when the two parts are forced together to hold the said parts from disengagement, the fastener being in this respect like a Well-known form of buttons for garments. In connection with a fastener of this character I employ awasher G2, said washer being made of sufficient diameter to overlap the proximate corners of the adja- .cent retaining-pieces, as in the construction `the exception of the means for fastening the parts together, which latter feature constitutes my present invention.
In making a cli'shion embodying my invention I first place the fabric or flexible material constituting the outer covering A `over a cellular mold-such, yfor instance, as shown in mysaid prior patent, No.'537,3'851. Said cover is arranged within the cells of said mold by depressing the same therein, the parts of the cover being depressed and successfully held Within the cells either by the hand of the operator or by the use of a block, such asAv is illustrated in my said prior patent, No; 537,385, as found most convenient.` After` the covering has been thus depressed, into each cellof the mold a suitable quantityof stuingor filling material is insertedintol each cell and is held or conined thereinjby means of the retaining-pieces F. After al1 the cells have been filled in the manner `describedv and the retaining-pieces placed there` vover the backing or foundationB is then placed over the several illegl compartmentsin contact with the retaining-pieces F, and the covering isthen secured `to the backing and to the corners of the retaining-pieces at the tufting-poivnts or intersection of the cells. As an additional means of securing the parts together the backing may be pastedA tothe retaining pieces and also the cover at the tufting-points. The tufting devices may be held in place to be inserted through the fabric t ent, No'. 537,385, is shownand 4described aV forming the outer covering and the backing of lthe-cushion in the manner shown in my prior patent, Reissuelo. 11, 779,or .in any Othersuitable manner.. In my said prier patv ying-points. I produce a construction. which is much stronger and more durable than that described in said prior patent. The construction wherein the washers overlap said retaining-pieces serve to form, in effect, a full double backing and to provide a backing -made i as' strong as if 'two full layers were employed.-
I claim as .my inventioni 1. As a novel articlegof manufacture, ya tuft-l ed cushion which embraces a covering of flexi- Able, material; filling' material, separate ree taining-pieces of cardboard or the like, ap-..

' 4. Asa novel article of manufacture, a tufted cushion which embraces a coveringfof flexible material, `lling material,A separate -refasteners consisting ofA buttons provided with four prongs which are bent outwardly in position to overlap the adjacent corners of said y In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I affix my signature, in presence of twowituesses, this 10th day of June, A.
