To all. whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MELVILLE L. DE WITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spragues Mill, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Mop-Wringer, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to mop-wringers, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which is constructed to be fitted to the upper edge of a bucket or like receptacle, so as to be disposed upon the inner side thereof, in order that the water wrung from the mop may be caught by the receptacle. It is furthermore designed to facilitate the application and removal of the device and to provide an improved arrangement of relatively-movable rollers which have means for adjusting the latter so as to squeeze the mop without wetting the hands of the operator.

With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanyin g drawings, and particularly pointed out in the accompanying claim, itbeingunderstood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mop-wringer constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the device.

Corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that the device comprises a frame having the opposite side pieces 1 and 2, which are connected by means of a back piece 3, which is secured to the rear edges of the sides, so that the lower edge 4 of the back, which terminates about midway between the upper and lower ends of the sides, forms a stopshoulder to rest upon the upper edge of a bucket 5 or the like, as plainly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Secured to the outer side of the back are the opposite cleats 6, which are arranged flush with the respective side edges of the backand project below the lower edge thereof, so as to form bifurcated seats with the adjacent edges of the respective side pieces and for the reception of the upper edge of the bucket. The rear edge of each side piece is beveled or rounded transversely, as at 7, so as to fit the inner walls of the bucket.

Located transversely between the opposite sides of the frame and adjacent to the lower edge of the back piece is a relatively-fixed roller 8, having its opposite journals mounted upon the side pieces. Cooperating with the relatively-fixed roller is a similar movable roller 9, which is journaled between the opposite extremities of a yoke-shaped operatinglever 10, which in turn is fulcrumed intermediate of its ends upon a transverse rod or bar 11, that has its opposite ends secured to the inner faces of the respective side pieces. This operating-lever is preferably formed from a single piece of metal, which is bent intermediate of its ends into a yoke, the intermediate portions of the sidesthereof being converged toward the bend of the metal, so as to form a convenient handle for rocking the lever upon the fulcrum-rod, whereby the relatively-movable roller 9 may be adjusted toward and away from the relatively fixed roller, according to the size of the mop and the degree of pressure required to squeeze the water therefrom.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the device is placed upon the upper edge of a bucket by receiving the lat- .ter in the slotted seats between the cleats 6 wardly to accommodate the mop, after which the upper end of the lever is thrown outwardly to close the rollers and the mop is drawn upwardly between the two rollers, a proper tension being had'uponthe latter by means of the lever to eifectively squeeze the water from the mop. It will nowrbe noted that the housing formed by the frame also prevents the expressed water from running out of the bucket and directs it into the interior thereof. It will be understood that the lever may be swung to bring the movable roller outwardly beyond the sides of the frame, whereby the spring sides of the yoke may be forced outwardly to free the pivots or jou rnals of the roller from the perforations in the yoke and to permit of the roller being replaced.

What is claimed is- A mop-wriuger, comprising a frame orhousiug having opposite sides formed by flat plates, a back plate secured to the rear edges of the sides and terminating short of the lower ends thereof, opposite cleats secured to the outer side of the back, projecting below the lower edge thereof, and located opposite the respective sides, a fixed roller mounted between the sides and located adjacent to the lower edge of the back, a transverse rod connecting the sides and located above the fixed roller and adjacent to the front edges of the sides, a yoke-shaped lever fulcrumed intermediate of its ends upon the transverse rod, and a roller journaled between the opposite ends of the lever and working in front of the fixed roller.
