WVILLIAM G. BROWVNE, OF KINGSTON, NElV YORK.
CAN-OPENER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 654,089, dated July 17, 1900.
Application filed Decei'nbi 7, 1899. Serial No. 739,572. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. BROWNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This can-opener can give a long or sweeping and clean cut and is capable of being used either right or left handed and to out either the top or side of a can; and the inven tion resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of the opener. Fig. 2 is a rear or under edge view of the blade or cutter. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig 1. Fig. 4 is a section along 0: cc, Fig. 1.
In the drawings is shown a handle or lever at, having a fulcrum or fulcrum end Z) and a cutter or blade 0'. The fulcrum is shown in form of a curve or rocker extended longitudinally with regard to handle a. This longitudinal curve or rocker Z) is continuous or free from interruptions or humps, so that the handle can swing or rock back and forth when resting on the fulcrum. This fulcrum is advantageously extended beyond the cutter, or the free end or point of such cutter, as thereby a long rock or sweep can be obtained, utilizing the entire cutting edge, and at the same time the handle a gets a satisfactory support or fulcrum-bearing for a long swing or arc. The fulcrum is shown with corrugations or roughening at d, forming a friction or non-slipping face, so that no displacement of the leveroccurs while the blade is cutting its way through the can wall or top. The fulcrum, besides being longitudinally curved, is also curved transversely, as seen in Fig. 4, the roughening d being on this under or transversely-curved face. The oppositelylocated guards or channels 6, Fig. 4, are formed by offsets or shoulders, and either one or another of such angles or guides 6 being run along an edge of the can will keep the knife guided for a symmetrical or neat out.
As the cutter is used either right or left handed one or another of the guides e sits to the can edge. The cutter 0 can be made to out either into the wall or side of the can or into the cover or top. In either case one or another of guides 6 will insure uniform distance of the cutting edge from the can edge. The cutter is located centrally to the fulcrum or between the guards or guides e.
The curved fulcrum accomplishes the result of having the fulcrum-point move forward or keep ahead of the knife while cutting, while in case of a single point for the fulcrum the knife gets nearer the fulcrum while cutting.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A can-opener comprising a cutter and a lever having its fulcrum provided with oppositely-located rims having offsets e forming guards or channels substantially as described.
2. A can opener comprising a cutter and a lever having its fulcrum provided with oppositely-located rims having offsets e forming guards or channels and the cutter located centrally to the fulcrum or between the guards substantially as described.
3. A can-opener comprising a cutter and a lever having an offset rim forming a guard or channel at its fulcrum substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM G. BROWNE. Witnesses:
WILLIAM C. PRESTON, JOHN C. CARL.
