HEAT OR DRAFT REGULATIN G DAMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 654,045, dated July 17, 1900.

Be it known that I, OLIVER N. ANDERSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancasterand State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heat 'or Draft Regulating Dampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a' full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a draft-regulating damper of that class in which a ring-plate and a circular disk, with overlapping edges, are so arranged or pivoted within a stove pipe or flue that either may be rotated separately or turned simultaneously.
The object of the invention is twofold: first, the production ofa simple but effective damper that may be readily applied to stove pipes or flues already in use without any previous alteration therein,whereby the draft may be regulated to a'degree of nicety not heretofore attained, and in which provision is made to prevent the accumulation of gas or vapor, always noxious and sometimes dan-' gerous, arising from the combustion or burning of coal or similar fuel, and, second, to increase the radiating or heat-yielding property of the pipe or flue between the fire-box and the point wherethe damper is seated, and thereby increasing the volume of heat from the body of the fuel in the fire-box.
The elements of the invention will severally and at large appear in the following description, and they will be separately and collectively set forth in the claims.
The purposes of the invention'are attained by the mechanism, devices, and means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, similar reference characters designating like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 shows a section of a stove pipe or flue with a plan of the ring-plate of the invention pivoted in place, the same being in horizontal position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of said ring-plate detached from Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached plan of the circular disk or damper-plate of the invention, showing the trunnion ends of pivot-pins with a turn-button in place. Fig. 4; is an elevation of said disk or plate with the turn-button removed from its pivot-pin. Fig. 5 is a vertical central section of the stove pipe or flue shown in Fig. 1 with a central vertical section of a damper emv the trunnion or pivot ends with their turnbuttons in place Fig. 8 is an elevation of the completed turn-buttons as they appear in- Fig. 6; and Fig. 9 is an elevation of the completed ring-plate as it appears in Fig. "7, showing the trunnion or pivot ends.
As shown in the drawings, the damper of the invention comprises a ring-plate A and a damper-plate 13, adapted to cover or close the central opening of said ring-plate. a
The ring-plate'A has its periphery fitting closely to the inner surface of the stove pipe or fine 1, in which it is placed. At diametrically-opposite points on both sides of the plate and flush with its outer edge are circular projections a, having screw-threaded apertures a at the centers thereof, into which are secured the threaded ends of tubular trun nions or gudgeons A A journaled in bearing-orifices through the body of the pipe or flue, and one of these trunnions, as A, has rigidly secured to its outerend a turn-button A .to'rotate or turn said plate, and the i turnbutton has on its outer'face a diamietrical ridge, rib, or groove aisituated inthe pl. of the plate,to indicate its position within 5 pipe or flue, while in the inner edge of plate, adjacent to the trunnion-securing pre jections, are formed recesses a to receive the pivot ends of the damper-plate yet to be de scribed. The ring-plate is provided about the central opening, flush with its inner edge and extending from recess to recess, with oppositely-disposed perpendicular walls a a to act as bafflers, aiding to retard under certain conditions the too-free escape or passage of heat, and on the sides opposite said walls, midway between said recesses, its faces-are provided with lugs or projections a a for the damper-plate to rest on, preventing its too-close contact with the ring-plate.

Said lugs are provided with screw-threaded orifices, into which are secured the threaded ends of pivot pins or spindles B B which are journaled in the axial bores of the trunnions A A the longer one B in that of the trunnion A. To the outer end of the spindle B is rigidly secured a turn-button B to rotate or turn said damper-plate, and the turn-button I) has on its outer face a diametrical ridge, rib, or groove 1), arranged in the central plane of the damper-plate to indicate its position when in use.
Now the several parts hereinbefore described occupying the several positions indicated in the drawings, the following observations will be noted: first, that the dam per may have any desired shape in plan, but it must conform to the contour or shape of the pipe or flue in connection with which it is to be used; second, that when the damper occupies the position indicated by the full lines in Fig.- 5 the draft through the pipe or line will be practically out off and the heat confined to the stove and that portion of the pipe or flue below the damper; third, that by reason of this confinement the fire will lie --"practically dead in the fire-box, the open space 2 allowing the gas or noxious vapor to escape; fourth, that by means of the turnbutton A and holding the turn-button l3 stationary the ring-plate A may be turned in the direction of the arrows at to any desired position or from the horizontal to the vertical, increasing the vent or opening around i the damper-plate B accordingly; fifth, that by means of the turn-button B and holding the turn-button A stationary the damperplate B may be turned in the direction of the arrows n to any desired point, opening the vent through the ring-plate A accordingly; sixth, that in any of these several positions of the damper-plate B (indicated by the dotted lines a: y z in Fig. 5) its wall 1), with the flange-plates b b in connection with the walls a a of the ring-plate, will act as bafflers, making the passage of the smoke, vapor, or gas through the pipe or flue broken or tortuous, and thereby aid in retaining the heat; seventh, that by means of the turn-buttons A B turning both together the damper may be rotated in either direction, as indicated by the arrows in. 'n, and completel y turned over; eighth, that in either position-direct, as shown, or inverted, as just mentioned-the action of the damper-plate will be the same, as noted; ninth, that the damper occupying the horizontal position indicated by full lines in Fig. 5, the checking or confining of the heat will be greatest; tenth, that the damper occupying the V61" tic'al'position hereinbefore mentioned, the whole draft will be practically open through the pipe or flue and the checking or reten-'.
tion of the heat will be least, and, eleventh, that when so desired the ring-plate A may be rigidly secured in the horizontal position indicated in Fig. 5, the damper-plate B remaining as shown and described, withoutmaterially afiecting the character or departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described the invention and ascertained and set forth the manner in which it is performed, what is considered new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a damper, having a ring-plate with perpendicular walls extending half way around and arranged on the opposite faces, one in each half, along the inner edge of its central opening, a damper-plate pivoted at diametrically-opposite points to said ringplate, and having a flat central body surrounded by a perpendicular wall centrally secured to the periphery thereof with oppositely-disposed flange-plates, one-in each half, extending from pivot-point to pivot-point and projecting outwardly from the adjacent edge of said perpendicular wall,- and each flange plate overlapping the adjacent inner edge of the ring-plate, with means provided, such as a turn-button secured to the outer end of a pivot-spindle,to rotate said damperplate,sub= stantially as described and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth 2'. A damper comprising: a ring plate, adapted to be rotatably mounted in a stove pipe or flue; tubular trunnions, each having one end rigidly secured at diametrically-opposite points into the outer edge of said ring' plate, and journaled in bearings through the body of said pipe or flue; oppositely-disposed perpendicular walls, one in each half, extending from pivot to pivot, and arrangedabout the inner edge of the ring-plate; a turn-button, secured to the outer end of one of said trun nions to rotate the ring-plate; a damper-plate, rotatably mounted in the central opening of said ring-plate; pivot-spindles, each having one end rigidly secured at diametrically-opposite points in the outer edge of thedamper plate and journaled through the axial bores of said tubular trunnions; a turn-button secured to the outer end of one of said pivotspindles to rotate the damper-plate; said dam- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
