SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,981, dated July 17, 1900.
Application filed November 6, 1899. Serial No. 736,985. (No model.)
T to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TOBIAS BEARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbiana, in the county of Oolu mbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in gates; and the object is to provide a gate mechanism of simple construction whereby *the gate may be opened and closed by a person while sitting in a vehicle.
I will describe a gate embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a gate embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of a portion thereof, showing the gate as open.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan View showing the gate as partly open, and Fig. 4 is a detail showing a means for adjusting alatch mechanism employed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the gate, 2 the rear gate-post, and 3 the front gatepost. Attached to the rear end of the gate are hangers 4 5, which are mounted to turn on a pivot-bar 6, secured to brackets 7, attached to the post 2, and on the bar 6 the gate is vertically adjustable. Mounted to turn in the hangers at 5 is an opening-bar 8, on the up per end of which are oppositelyextended arms 9 10. From the arm 9 a rope or cable 11 extends through an opening in a bracket 12, attached to a post 13, extended upward at one side of the gate, and from the arm 10 a rope or cable 1st extends through an open ing in a bracket 15, attached to a post 16 at the opposite side of the gate.
Attached to the lower portion of the opening-bar is a cross-head 17, from the opposite ends of which draw-rods 18 19 extend to connections with levers 20 and 21, pivoted on the frontend of the gate at opposite sides. These levers 20 and 21 are adapted to engage, re- Spectively, with spring-arms 22 23, attached to a cross-bar 24, secured to the post 3, the ends of these springs'being designed to engage with a lug 25, attached to the front end of the gate, and it will be noted in Fig. 4 that the levers 2O 21 are attached to the gate by means of a bolt 20, which extends through a slot, so that the levers may be adjusted when the gate is adjusted to provide more or less space underneath it.
Extended upward from the rear post of the gate is a closing-rod 26, from which arms 27 28 extend in opposite directions. From the arm 27 a cable 29 extends through an open= ing in the bracket 15, and from the arm 28 a cable 30 extends through an opening in the bracket 12.
In operation when it is desired to open the gate upon drawing or pulling the rope 11 the opening-bar 8 will be rotated in such direction as to cause the lever 20 to press against the spring-arm 22, forcing it out of the line of movement 'of the lug 25. Then by further movement of said opening-bar the end of the cross-head 17 to which the draw-bar 19 is attached will engage with the rear post of the gate, causing the gate to swing open in the direction of the post 16. After passing through the gate a person in a vehicle by drawing upon the rope or cable 29 may swing the gate to its closed position. Of course in going in the opposite direction the gate may be opened by drawing upon the cable 14.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a gate, of a pivotbar upon which the gate is mounted to swing, an opening-bar, arms on said opening-bar, ropes or cables extended from the arms on said opening-bar, a cross-head on said bar, levers pivoted on the forward end of the gate, draw-rods connecting'said levers to the crosshead, and spring-latches adapted to be operated by the levers, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a gate, of a pivotbar, brackets attached .tothe gate and mounted to swing on the pivot-bar, an opening-bar mounted to rotate in said brackets, arms on the upper portion of said opening-bar, ropes or cables attached to said arms and extended in opposite directions, a cross-head on the lower portion of the opening-bar, levers pivoted to the forward portion of the gate at opposite sides, draw-rods extended from said levers to the cross-head, and holding-springs ICO - necting said levers to the cross-head, a crossattached to the forward gate-post and adapted to be operated by said levers, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a gate and front and rear gate-posts, of a pivot-bar mounted in brackets extended from the rear gate-post, hangers attached to the gate and mounted to swing on said pivot bar, an opening bar mounted to rotate in said hangers, means for rotating said opening-bar, a cross-head attached to the opening-bar, levers pivoted to the forward end of the gate, draw-rods conbar attached to the front gate-post, and holding-springs mounted on said cross-bar for engaging with a lug on the front end of the gate and adapted to be operated by the levers, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a gate, of a pivotbar on which the gate is mounted to swing, an openingbar mounted to rotate relatively to the gate, arms extended in opposite directions from the upper end of said bar, ropes or cables extending from said arms, brackets through which said ropes or cables pass, latch devices operated by a rotating movement of the opening-bar, the said opening-bar, upon a further operation, operating to open the gate, and a closing mechanism independent of the opening mechanism, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a gate, of a pivotbar on which the gate is mounted to swing, an opening-bar, a latch mechanism operated by said opening-bar, arms extended in opposite directions from the upper end of the bar, ropes or cables extending from said arms, a rod on the rear post of the. gate, arms on said rod, and ropes or cables extended from the arms, substantially as specified.
6. The combination with a gate, of a pivot bar on which the gate is mounted to swing, an opening-bar, means for rotating the opening-bar, levers adjustably connected to the forward end of the gate, and connections between said levers and the opening-bar, substantially as specified.
