JOHN WILLIAM COOK, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
TRAVELER FOR TWISTING OR DOUBLING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 653,926, dated July 17, 1900.
Application filed July 27,1899. Serial No. 725,338- (No model.
To all whmn it 77mg concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM CooK, of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Travelers Used in Twisting or Doubling Yarns or Threads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to travelers such as are commonly used in twisting or doubling yarn or threads in a ring-frame, and has for its object to reduce the friction between the traveler and the ring, and thereby permit the employment of a heavier traveler and insure a stcadier running than heretofore.
The invention is embodied in that form of traveler having its lower end bent into a loop or hook to take under the ring and its upper end bentto project over the ring, the loop at the upper end being angular to provide an eye for the reception of the yarn or thread. Heretofore drags or travelers having usually the form just described have been substantially straight or rectilinear between the ends, so as to bear against the concave cylindrical inner surface of the ring, the contact being in a continuous line during the operation of the frame. The element of friction therefor has been considerable and has necessitated the employment of a traveler that is relatively light, and therefore notlong-lived or durable, and, further, it has required the use of alarge quantity of lubricant or grease. Another form of traveler has been tried having the piece which connects the upper and lower hooks bent inward to form a single bearing on the ring, the lower hook being wide, however, to permit the traveler to rock on said single bearing; but this form proved to be objectionable owing to the liability of the traveler to be pulled off from the ring during its unsteady movements around the latter. According to the present invention the traveler is bent between its ends to provide a small projection to bearagainst the surface of the ring to reduce the friction.
On the drawings, Figure 1 represents the traveler heretofore usually employed for twisting-frames. Fig. 2 represents a traveler embodying my invention.
On the drawings, Ct indicates the spindlerail; b, the spindle, having the usual whirl c, and d the bobbin. The ring-rail is indicated at e, and one of the rings at f.
The traveler as it has heretofore usually been made is shown in Fig. 1 at g. Its lower end is bent into a hook or loop g to take under the flange f of the ring,-and its upper end is bent into the eye 9 and then into the hook or loop g to take over the flange f of the ring. The lower loop or hook g is formed to fit the lower flange of the ring with sufficient accuracy to guide it around said ring without rocking thereon. The yarn is passed from the delivery-rolls through the eye g to the bobbin, and when the latter is rotated the traveler assumes the position shown on the drawings. According to my invention the traveler is curved outwardly at 9 adjacent to the lower loop or hook to form a point or projection g between the eye and the outward bend, which projection. bears against the inner surface of the ring. I retain the substantially-close fit of the lower loop or hook on the lower flange of the ring, and thus prevent the traveler from rocking on the ring, the traveler always having two surfaces or points bearing on the ring to guide and steady its movements and prevent it from being pulled off the ring. By this construction the friction is materially decreased, a heavier traveler may be used to insure steadier running, the traveler lasts longer, and a smaller quantity of lubricant may be used.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a Way of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, I declare that what I claim is A traveler of the character described, having an outward curve or bend adjacent to the lower loop or hook, and having a projection above said outward curve to bear against the inner surface of the ring, substantially as and for the purpose described, the said lower loop or hook being formed to fit the lower flange of the ring to guide the traveler around the ring without rocking.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN WILLIAM COOK.
