UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. SWAN, OF OSIIKOSH, WISCONSIN.
KING-BOLT SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,269, dated July 10, 1900 Application filedMay 12. 1900. Serial No. 16,453. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O SWAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oshkosh, Winnebago county, lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in King-Bolt Sockets, of which the following is a specification in such full, clear, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains to make, construct, and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in king-bolt sockets for vehicles, and has for its object to provide a king-bolt that can be secured to axles of varying depths without readjustment of any of the parts forming the king-bolt socket.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a fifth-wheel provided with my improved king-bolt socket. Fig. 2is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the clip-tie. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
The socket for the king-bolt 1 consists of perforated collars 2, formed integral with the bolster-plate 3, that is secured to the bolster 4, a collar 5, preferably formedintegral with the brace 6, a sleeve 7 ,formed with the lower fifthwheel 8, and a collar 9, provided upon the end of the lower perch-irons 10. A clip 11 fits over the axle opposite said king-bolt socket and is secured by a clip-tie 12, which is provided with a perforated collar 13, that encircles the king-bolt socket and is movable longitudinally thereon. The clip-tie is preferably constructed with its collar ofiset, as at 14, so as to arrange the same above the lower perch-irons in case an axle of unusual depth is used.
By means of this construction I am enabled By my construction the depth of the axle is immaterial, since the collar upon the clip-tie can be moved without disturbing or interfering in any Way with the parts forming the king-bolt socket, and at the same time said socket is securely held in its proper relative position to the axle.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a king-bolt socket, of a clip-tie rigidlysecured to the axle and provided with the collar encircling the king-bolt socket and adjustable longitudinally thereof, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a sleeve rigidly secured to the lower fifth-wheel and forming a part of the king-bolt socket, of a clip-tie provided with a collar ofiset from said cliptie encircling said sleeve and movable longitudinally thereof, substantiallyas described.
In witness whereof I sign this application, in the presence of two witnesses, this 5th day of May, 1900.
HENRY O. SWAN.
