To all whom it nury concern: l
Be it known that I, WILLIE G. EATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to looms, and more particularly to that class of .looms for weaving fabrics in which filling of one color is used for the greater part of the fabric, as in blankets, quilts, and similar fabrics, and fillings of dilferent colors are used in the lesser part of the fabric, as in the borders, &c.
The object of my invention is to provide a loom, particularly adapted for weaving the class of fabrics above referred to, in which are used in combination an automatic fillingchanging mechanism of any well-known type, which supplies the filling automatically, and a pattern-chain mechanism for controlling the operation of the automatic filling-changing mechanism and in which may also be used a series of movable drop shuttle-boxes carrying different colored or sized fillings, the operation of the shuttle-boxes being also controlled by a pattern-chain mechanism to bring into operation any one of the series of boxes as desired. I
In my improved loom having an automatic fillin -changing mechanism and a series of drop shuttle-boxes and a pattern-chain mechanism, the pattern-chain mechanism determines when the automatic filling-changing mechanism shall operate and when -the dropshuttle-box mechanism shall operate. When the automatic filling-changing mechanism is in use, the drop-shuttle-box mechanism will be inoperative and when the drop shuttleboxes are in use the automatic filling-changing mechanism will be inoperative, and the ordinary shipping mechanism will be operative to stop the loom in case of breakage or exhaustion of filling in the running shuttle to allow the weaver to supply fresh filling by hand.
I have shown in the drawings my improvements combined with the well-known Northrop type of automatic bobbin-changing mechanism and a well-known type of movable drop-shuttle-box mechanism; but I do not limit my invention to any particular automatic filling-changing mechanism or dropshuttle-box mechanism; as any kind of automatic filling-supply mechanism or drop-shuttle-box mechanism may be used.
I have shown in the drawings only suflicient parts of a loom to enable those skilled in the art to understand the nature of my invention.
The bobbin-changing mechanism, as above stated, is of the well-known Northrop type, shown and described in the United States Letters Patent No. 529,940, and the dropshuttle-box mechanism or mechanism for raising and lowering the shuttle-boxes is of a well-known type and fully shown and described in the United States Letters Patent No. 600,488.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is an end view of a loom, the shuttle-box and shipper-lever guide being in section at a point indicated by line 1 1, Fig. 2, looking in direction of arrow a and corresponding to Fig. 3 of said Patent No. 600,488 and showingthe drop-shuttle-box-operating mechanism with my improvements applied thereto. The slide-leveris shown in its intermediate position; and Fig. '3 is a plan view this instance a revolving reel carrying bobbins having thereon filling of one color which may be used for the body of the fabric and mechanism for operating said reel to automatically supply fresh filling at the proper time.
The vertical movement or the calling of the shuttle-boxes 1 is controlled in this instance by the indications of the pattern-chain 2 through the connector 3 to the rock-shaft 4 of the well-known drop-shuttle-boX-operating mechanism shown in Fig. 1, which need not be described herein, as it is fully shown and described in Patent No. 600,488, above referred to and to which reference is hereby made.
In connection with the operation of the drop shuttle-boxes 1 is used a weft or filling feeler motion to stop the loom in case of the breaking or exhaustion of filling in the running shuttle, so that the attendant can supply fresh filling. The weft-feeler motion or stopping mechanism in this instance comprises the ordinary weft-fork 5, pivoted on the front end of the slide 6, mounted on the top of the breast-beam 7. \Vhen there is a failure of weft, the fork 5 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, to be engaged by the upper end 8' of the hammer-lever 8, pivoted at 8 and operated by a cam 9 on the cam-shaft 10 to move back the slide 6.
Pivoted on the plate 11, secured on the top of the slide 6, is a lever 12, which moves with said slide and also has an independent motion in a horizontal plane to extend in a position substantially parallel with the slide and engage upon the backward movement of the slide when there is a failure of weft an arm 13, fast at its lower end on a rock-shaft 14, journaled in the usual way under the breastbeam at its front side and having an arm 15 fast thereon at its other end to engage and move the shipper-lever 16 to stop the loom in the ordinary way.
When the drop shuttle-boxes are in use, the lever 12 will be in a position to engage the arm 13 and operate the shipper-lever 16 to stop the 100m in case of failure of weft to allow the attendant to supply new filling by hand, and the automatic fillingchanging mechanism will be'inoperative and the loom will run as if it were only provided with movable drop shuttle-boxes. At the proper time, determined by the indications of the patternchain, the drop-shuttle-box mechanism is rendered inoperative and the automatic fillingsupply mechanism is put into operation in the manner tobe hereinafter fully described.
The automatic filling-changing mechanism is located in this instance at the right-hand end of the loom, and consists in this instance of a reel 17, of the well-known Northrop type, carrying bobbins 18, which may have thereon filling of one color. When the loom is running with the automatic filling changing mechanism in use, upon exhaustion of filling in the running shuttle a pusher is operated to force a new bobbin into the shuttle and a partial rotation is given to the reel 17 to bring another bobbin into position bythe wellknown mechanism of the Northrop loom, which is fully shown and described in Letters Patent No. 529,940, heretofore referred to and to which reference is hereby made.
The weft-feeler-fork motion controls the operation of the pusher for inserting a new bobbin when the filling-changing mechanism is in use. The lever 12, carried on the wef -feelerfork-motion slide 6 and above referred to, when it is in the position shown in Fig. 1 will engage upon the backward movement of the slide 6, in case of failure of weft, the upper .end of an arm 19, fast on a stud 20, journaled in alinement with the rock-shaft 14, (see Fig. 3,) and rock said stud and cause a trip 20 (shown dotted in Fig. 1) to be moved, which is held in position to be engaged by a bunter 20" (see Fig. 1) on the advance of the lay, when the empty shuttle is on the same end of the loom, to operate the pusher and cause it to force a bobbin into the running shuttle in the well-known way.
\Vhen the lever 12 is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, it cannot engage the arm 13 on the rock-shaft 14: to operate the shipperlever 16 and stop the 100111 in case of failure of weft, so that the loom runs as if it were only provided with automatic filling-supply mechanism, and independent of the drop-shuttle-box mechanism.
In order to automatically change from the use of the drop shuttle-boxes to the fillingsupply mechanism,the lever 12 must be moved at the proper time out of engagement with the arm 13 on the rock-shaft 14, which operates the shipper-lever 16, and into engagement with the arm 19 on the stud 20, which through intermediate connections moves into position the trip to be engaged by the hunter on the lay to operate the pusher of the bobbinchanging mechanism, and vice versa. I control the automatic movement of the lever 12 for the purpose above stated through indications on a pattern-chain, and in this instance the lever 12 is connected through intermediate connections with the pattern chain mechanism'with which the drop shuttle-boxes are connected, and the pattern-surfaces of said pattern-chain mechanism as the same is revolved in the ordinary way regulate the movement of the lever 12.
The intermediate connections between the lever 12 and the pattern-chain mechanism consist in this instance of a rod or connector 21, (see Fig. 3,) attached at one end to the inner downwardly-curved end of the lever 12 and at its other end to-one arm of the anglelever 22, pivoted at 23. The other arm of the angle-lever 22 is connected by a link 24 with a centrally-pivoted lever 25, which is connected at its other end with a connector 26-to a lever 27, extending over the pattern-indi cators on the pattern-chain 2.
Instead of connecting the lever 12 on the slide 6 with the pattern-chain 2, as abovede scribed, it may be connected directly with the ing said means into and out of operative relation to said mechanism.

'7. In a loom the following instrumentalities, viz: a filling-changing mechanism,a stopping mechanism, and a pattern-controlled device for acting on either of said mechanisms.
8. Ina loom the following instrumentalities, viz: a filling-changing mechanism, a dropshuttle-box mechanism, pattern-controlled devices for rendering the .drop-shuttle-box mechanism operative or inoperative as desired, and pattern-controlled devices for acting on either the filling-changing or stopping mechanism.
9. In a loom, an automatic filling-supply mechanism, a drop-shuttle-box mechanism, and a pattern-chain mechanism to determine the time of operation of the filling-supply mechanism to transfer filling, and the dropshuttle-box mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
10. In a loom, an automatic filling-supply mechanism, a drop-shuttle-box mechanism, a Weft-feeler-fork mechanism, and apatternchain mechanism to determine the time of operation of the filling-supply mechanism to transfer fillingand the drop-shuttle-box mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
11. In a loom, in combination, an autofilling-changing, and the drop-shuttle-box mechanism, substantially as shown and described.
