TO ALL WHGM IT MAY GONCERN: V
Be it known thatl I, JOSEPH SMITH, of Loth, Belgium, have invented a new and improved Spindle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact. description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the salne, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi' this specification, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal central section of this invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to regulate the tension of the thread as the same Winds on the bobbms, spools, or tubes in machines for spinning, doubling and spooling wool, cotton, and other fibrous materials, whereby a softer thread is obtained than on the ordinary cap-trames. This object is obtained by attaching to the base of `the ordinary cap a ring of metal or any other suitable material, said ring being,- nitide by preference in the form of a con'e and attached to the cap by a'screw-thread or other means in suoli a manner that the thread inits course from the delivery rollers to the spool or bobbin in the interior of 'the cap passes round the base of this ring, and by raising or lowering said ring the thread is permitted to slide either on the small circumference of the cap or on the large surface oi' the ring, and thereby the tension of the thread is regulated.
A represents the cap, to the lower part of which the ring B is attached either by a screw-thread or in any7 other suitable manner. The cap A is provided with an internal projection, a, (see iig. and the spool or bobbin C is placed on the tube D, and said spool does not diier in construction from the ordinary bobbin, a revolving-motion being imparted to it by the whirl F, secured to the tube D in the usual manner. By this ring the tension oi' the thread is regulated, as above specified, and, furthermore, said ring prevents the thread from rubbing against or from becoming entangled outhe outer surface of the cap. In order to obtain greater softness of the thread, I reverse the ordinary position oi'ithe bobbin, placing the thin end thereof down, and compelling it to revolve with the tube by a feather-key, or other suitable means. The projection a, in the interior of the cap, reduces the diameter thereofI near its lower end, and facilitates the passage of the thread to the bobbin.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The adjustable ring B, in combination with the cap A and spool or bobbin C, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 13th day of September, 1806.
JOSEPH SMITH.
