'ro ALL WHoM rr MAY ooNcnnN= Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. SHAW, of Saco, in the county ofYork, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improved Pill Machine; and I hereby declare the following to be a full,
i clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being had to' the accompanying Figure 1 shows a top plan of my inveption with a portion of the plate a broken out in orderv to show the curved grooves, which are the same in both plates.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my inventionrcduced in scale from iig. 1. V-
The object of this invention is to make -a machine for the rolling of pills, by which, when thus rolled, the pills shall be perfectly, ornearly perfectly, globular. Pills, as now made, arebyno means regular in form, or equal in the quantity of medicinal substance embodied in each one. `Uniformity ofsize and regularity of shape are desired in these articles for various considerations of convenience and utility. 'The reason why pills are so frequentlycirregular in shape and size is that the pressure in rolling is applied only around a single axis of a pill, thus tending to 'make it nearer cylindrical than globular in form, and having also the tendency to make the differentparts of .the pill of different degrees of solidity or density. The only way now used to roll pills, so' as to lpress them upon all sides and' all vdirections upon the circumference, is to roll them in the'hand, and thus to manufacture them as nearly as possible of la globular shape. But this is of courses'. slow process.v My method 'is to arrive at the same result, but with theraid of certain devices, so that economy of time and'labor is eected.
'If 'two plates with corresponding grooves were placed together and moved backward and forward ina straight line, it is clear that the tendency would `be to form a pill Aof l a cylindrical shape, modified only by the curved sides of the grooves. Now,'whcli the grooves are curved thesubstance to be manufactured into pills, as it is by the opposite ymotion of the two plates moved around a circle or curve, is revolving around a continually changing axis of motion, thus bringing all parts of the exteriorlsurface of the pill to the pressure of the faces of the two grooves, which will, it is evident, make the'pill perfectly round when the pressure is even.
a a show the two plates with .opposing and corresponding grooves, b. c d show two arms united with the two plates, as shown in the drawing. In the arm cl is seen the upright bolt j'. This bolt passes through the arm c, as seen in. the drawing.
The method of operatingf the device is vas follows: Place the plate et up'on the plate a,so that the bolt f passes through the end of c; grasp c with the hand and move a backward and' forward.` The two arms coZ represent the radii of acircle, of which the curved plates are segments. As the two plates are swung backward aud forward, or around their curve, the pills in the grooves are continually presenting different portions of their surfaces to an equal pressure, gand thus are finally shaped into globes.` Great celerity and certainty are secured by this device, As the curve is extended the capacity ot' the machine is increased.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of'the two curvilinear grooved plates a a united and operated by the two radial arms-e al,
the plate a moving up'on the stationary .plate a', and having for its axis the bolt f, all as and for thezpurposes specified. v
