TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, B. F. PARTRID'GE, Jr., of Columbus, in the county of Hickman, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful improvement in Locomotive Pilot; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved locomotive pilot.
Figure 2 is a. plan oritop view.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of a pilot fora locomotive engine, and consists of a series of inclined rollers on the sides of a wedge-shaped frame similar in its general form to the pilot usually attached to, the front of locomotives for the purpose of clearing the way of obstructions on the railroad track, and also ofvcircular disks pivoted on the bottom of the pilot frame, one at the front end or point, and the others at the sides projecting over the top of the rails. The advantage of the rollers and revolving disks is that whatever obstruction they may come in contact with will be thrown out of the way and off from the track with certainty by their rotation.
A is the frame of a pilot made in the usual triangular form for connection with the front end of a locomotive, and having bottom plates a a extending further forward than the top plates b b in such manner that a series of rollers, c c, pivoted to them at both ends, from the front end to the rear end of the sides, shall lie more or less inclined side by side, as shown clearly in the drawings. The nose or front end of the pilot is made very strong and solid by means of a triangular block, 0. fastened to the bottom frame-plates a a, in which the lower end of'thc front one of the series of rollers c 0 is pivoted or stepped. Three circular plates or disks d d d are pivoted horizontally on the under side of the bottom frame-plates a a,,one at thfront end of the pilot projecting forward, and the others on each side extending over so as to clear the rails, as shown in fig. 2. The edges of the disks may be serrated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The horizontal revolving disks d d d, having their peripheries serrated, pivoted to the under side of the bottom plates a a, in combination therewith and with the pilot-frame A and inclined rollers a, substantially as herein described for the purpose specified.
