ADJUSTABLE PU LLEY-G EAR..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.l 652,384, dated J une 26, 1900. Application filed September 7, 1899. Serial No. 729,683. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that We, GEORGE GODE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and HANS KNUDSEN, a citizen of the United States, residents of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Adjustable Pulley- Gears, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in adjustable pulley-gears5 and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangements of parts, as hereinafterdescribed, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a plan or top View of an apparatus embodying our invention, showing one of the rigid sliding cones drawn back and the other rigid sliding cone pushed in and the fixed eXpausible cones in their relative positions. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the rigid sliding cones in a central position and the adjustable cones in their relative positions. Fig. 3 is a section through one of the sliding rigid cones and one of the adjustable cones, the sliding cone being drawn out. Fig. L is an outer end View of one of the adjustable cones. Fig. 5 is an outer end View of one of the rigid sliding cones.
A represents the supporting-frame. To this frame are secured bearings B B. O O are shafts mounted in said bearings, each of said shafts having at one end a disk secured thereto by brazing, riveting, or other means. Each of said disks D is formed with a number of ribs, the disk being furcated at the end of each rib. In each of said forks is fulcrumed an arm or lever E. To the upperend of each of said arms or levers is attached one end of a spring F, the other end of said spring being secured to the hub of the disk D, as shown. The outer end of each of the arms or levers E is fitted with a pivoted shoe G to receive the belt H, thus forming what we term the fixed expansible cone.77 The shoes G are each formed with a rearward extension g, having an opening, through which a bar or arm of the rigid slid*Y ing cone passes, as hereinafter described. Upon each of said shafts O C is also mounted, but s0 as to slide freely, whatwe term a rigid slidingcone, consistingof a smallinner disk I and an outer disk I, connected together by arms or bars I2. The outer portions of the disks I are each formed with a hub havinga recess 'L' formed therein, in which the forked ends of a shipper-lever J fits, said shipperlever being fulcrumed in its center at c to a cross-bar A in the center of the frame A. In order t0 im part a sliding motion to the hub of the disk I and to the shipper-lever J for operating the arms of the expansible cones, we employ a lever K, furcated at one end to t into the groove i in the hub of the disk I on the shaft C', the outer end of said lever being formed with an internal screw-thread that Works upon a screw-threaded rod L, mounted in bearings B, attached to the frame A, the outer end of said rod L being fitted with a grooved pulley M, operated by a belt, as shown, or other suitable means, whereby the lever K is caused to travel upon the screwthread rod L and im parts a travelingmotion to the hub of disk I and through shipperlever J a Similar motion, but in an opposite direction, to the hub of the disk 1, so that when one of said disks is forced in the other will be forced out, and vice versa. Each of the arms of the rigid cones passes through a slot formed in the interior g at the rear of the shoes G on the ends of the arms of the eX-' pansible cones. Motion is transmitted to the shaft O from any suitable source, and motion is transmitted from the shaft O by gears or other means to the machine to be driven.
The operation is as follows: Motion is first transmitted to the driving-shaft O from any suitable source by means of a belt. A band passing over the pivoted shoes on the fixed eX- pansible cones imparts motion to the driven shaft O. Thus if the shipper-lever is parallel both shafts will be rotated at the same speed; but if the shipper-lever is shifted by means of the lever K one of the rigid sliding cones will be drawn out and the other forced in and thus alter the diameter of the ends of the expansible cones, so that the speed will be altered as required.
l. An adjustable pulley-gear comprising two parallel shafts, each having mounted IOO thereon a fixed eXpansible cone, and a rigid. slidable eone Working within same, a shipperlever forholding the rigid slidable cones in position, and mechanism for shifting one of the hubs of sliding eones; substantially as set forth. l
2. An adjustable pulley-gear having two parallel shafts, a iixed expansible eone and av y'rigid slidable eone on each shaft, a shaft hava worm thereon, a lever having an internal worm at one end to Work upon same and a fork at the other end to embrace the boss of one of the sldable cones, and a shipper-lever for imparting a relative movement to the other slidable eone; substantially as set forth.
3. In an adjustable pulleygear, having two parallel shafts, a iixed expansible cone and a :rigid slidable cone upon each shaft, a shoe pivoted at the end of each of the arms or levers of the expansible cones for carrying a belt or eord for imparting motion from the driving-shaft to the driven shaft, inv combination with a shipper-lever, and a lever for imparting motion to one of the slidahle cones, substantially as set forth.
4. In an adjustable pulley-gear, a rigid eX- pansihle cone, consisting of a disk secured to GEORGE CODE. HANS KNUDSEN.
