TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BRADFORD G. 'H. HATJIAWAY, of Rock Stream, in the county of Yates, and State of New York,.havc invented a new and useful Improvement in Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed specification and drawings, making part of this specification, in whieh-- Figure 1 is a perspective view.

The harvester I am about to dcscribexis supported upon two wheels, A and A, attached to an axle, B, upon which the wheels revolve when moving backwards, and which revolves itself when the wheels are moving forwards. This is effected in the manner familiar in such machines by means cf'a ratchet-wheel and pawl on either or both of the wheels A A. Motion is communicated from the revolving axle to the knives by means of the following mechanism: The radial arms D are attached to a hub fitting loosely on the axle, and which is fixed or released by mechanism hereafter to be described. To the three arms D are respectively attached three planet-wheels, E, the centres of which are at the angles of an equilateral triangle, and equidistant from the centre of the shaft B. As the arms D'revolve with the forward motion of the axle the planet-wheels E are made to revolve by the internal spur-gearing C out in the inner surface of the hollow spherical case G, by which the entire mechanism for driving the knives is enclosed,-said casingbcing constructed in two hemispheres, U and C, fastenedtogether by clamps or lugs. The planet-wheels E gear into and give motion to the internal pinion F, which turns on the axle B, being formed with a central chamber fitting over the hub of the radial arms D. The said pinion F is part of'the face-wheel F, being attached on t e back of the same. On the front of the wheel F is the bevelled gearing F, which works into and gives motion to the bevelled pinion G on the crankshaft, on the other end of which is the crank-wheel I, driving-the pitman K and knives L, constructed in the usual manner. The crank-shaft passes through a hollow cylindrical projection, C, from the spherical casing of which it forms a. part. The shoe M is hinged to the braces N, N, and N, and the pitman K is hinged to the cutter-bar so that the finger-bar may be folded over the tongue when desired. The brace N is attached by an eye to the cylindrical pipe 0 at P, and a bracket, P, is also attached by a similar eye at P. These eyes turn upon the pipes C,and give a vertical oscillatory motion to the brace N and bracket P. The tongue O-rests upon and is secured to the brace N and bracket P. The brace N is also attached to the lower side of the bracket P, and is carried half around the pipe C so as to form one-half of the eye P, while the bracket forms the other half. The other eye, P, is in like manner formed by the arm Q and bracket P. The arm Q is raised by the bell-crank lever Q, to which it is connected by the link Q, and it is held up by the bifurcated brace S, which, extending from the bracket P, rests against the long arm of the lever Q. By this means the cutter-bar is raised when desired. The brace J. is attached to the shoe and to the tongue, and the brace N to the shoe and to the arm Q at the base of the tongue. The tongue 0 being attached to the bracket P, turns with the oscillation of the same. The driver riding upon the seat R, sustained upon the standard R,
controls the lever Q, by which the height of the cutter-bar is regulated, and also the lever H. The legs of the latter are pivoted to the collar of the spherical case C so as to permit the lever to oscillate laterally. To
the lever H are attached the arm and yoke H. The arm passes through a hole in the case and the semicircular yoke embraces the clutch H, fitting into a circular slot cut for the purpose in the outer face of the said clutch, which is a cylindrical pipe, fitting over the axle, on which it plays longitudinally, as controlled byth lever H, and having projections on its end fitting into corresponding depressions D in the end of the hub of the radial arms D. The clutch H is formed with grooves in its inner face, receiving corresponding ribs on the axle, so that while the clutch may be slid longitudinally on the axle it always revolves with the same.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The spherical case, when attached to the axle and constructed in two parts, 0 and C, and having a projecting cylindrical pipe, 0, which forms bearings at P'ancl P for the attachment of the cutting apparatus, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the lever H, yoke H, clutch H radial arms with depressions D, and the planetwheels E, when constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
3. The braces N and N and N, in combination with the tongue-O, bracket 1?, and pipe 0, when c'onstructed and arranged substantiall as set forth.
4. So arranging the braces uniting the cutter-bar with the supporting-frame of the machine as that they may oscillate upon and around the pipe G, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the lever Q, arm Q, bracket P, and pipe 0, substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
