TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONOERN:
' Be it known that I, S. B. HARTMAN, of Millersville, Lancaster county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bridles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a side view of my invention applied to a horse. This invention relates to' a new and useful improvement in safety-bridles, for which Letters Patent were .granted to me bearing date November 7, 1865. The invention consists in the application of anti-friction pulleys to the bridle, whereby the bridle is rendered more eiicient than hitherto.
A represents the throat-latch, B the browband, C the cheek-strap, and D the bit, of my improved bridle. The head-strap E passes over the head behind the ears ofthe animal, and has a metallic frame, a, similar to a buckle frame or bowrsecured to eaoh end of it; each frame having a roller, iitted in it, over which and through the frames a the cheek-straps C pass; the lower ends of said straps being attached to the rings c of the bit, and passing upward through the frames a, and then down through the bit-rings c, and having reins-cl attached tothem. 1f desired, rollers may be fitted in the-bit-rings, soth'at the least possible resistance will 'be offered to the reins d when drawn or pulled. This arrangement, it will be seen, admits of the bit being drawn upward into the mouth of the animal when the latter` becomes fractions or unmanageable, and is a great improvement over my device originally patented. Reins e, formed of an elastic cord, are attached directly to the bit and to rings f, connected to the reins d. These reins e pass through the martingale rings g. The elastic reins e, in driving, will rst act upon the bit D, and if the horse will not be checked until the reins d, between the bit D and rings f are allowed to operate, the bit will be drawn upward in the horses mouth so as to effectually control him. The reins e, however, are designed to bc suiciently strong or stiilrr to admit of the bit D being drawn pretty hard in the horses mouth to answer all ordinary purposes before the cheek-straps C are operated upon, and the bit D drawn upward. i
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent- The employment or use of friction-rollers b, applied to the cheek-straps C, of the bridle, in combination with the bit D, head-strap E,`and reins zi, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I further claim the elastic reins e, in combination with the reins d, cheek-straps C, and bit D, all arranged and applied to the bridle, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this day of January, 1866.
s. n. HARTMAN. Witnesses:
