FAYETTE S. GILES, OF. NEW YORK,'N. Y. Letters Patent NJ. 65,208, dated JIay 28,1867.
ruraovsusiir INSTEM-WINDING WATCHES.
'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FAYETTE S. GILES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new 7 and useful Improvement in'Stem-Wiuding Watches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description ofthe same reference being had to thc'aceompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the works of the watch constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is adetached view of certain portions of the same.
Similar lettersiof reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to a novel means of winding a watchby the agency of the stem thereof; and it consists in a toothed ring so combined with the, spur-wheel attached to the spring-barrel, and a contrate-wheel attached to the winding-stem or arbor, that the spring-barrel may be rotated to wind the watch by a turning movement of the aforesaid stem. v
'To enable others to understand the construction and operationot uiy invention, I will proceed to describeit with reference to the drawings v v A is a spur-wheel placed upon the spindle a of the spring-barrel, and B is the spur-wheel connected with the hands of the watch. Placed within the case a* of the watch, and held in plac'eby the overlapping edges of the screw-head's a, is a ring, 0, the internal circumference of which is tooth'ed and gears into the wheel A, as shown in fig. 1. The winding-stem or arbor is represented at D, and has placed loose upon the cylindrical portion hot the inner end thereof a contrate-ivheehc, which gears into the teeth of the toothed ring C, and which is retained in position upon the said portion of the arbor by a slender bar,'b, which extends into :1. narrow groove formed circunifcrentially in the c'ontrate wheel just mentioned. The said wheel is furnished, at its innermost side, with an annular series of angular teeth, which gear into a corresponding series of similar teeth or arbor D in sucha manner as to be capable of sliding thereon, so as to be'brought away frorfl the wheel 0 and into gear with the spur-whoel'B, when required. Aspring-lever,f, is situated'just within the toothed ring 0,
with itsextremity fitting into a groove formed circumferentially in the eontrate-wheel d in such a way as to press the same out against the other contrate-wheel c. A sliding-pin,g, working through the edge of the watchcase, has its inner end resting against an -enlargement,g', formed upon the spring-lever, so that by pressing the said pin inward it will operate the aforesaid lever to move the contrate-wheel d away from the other contrate' wheel c, and bringthe same into gear with the spur-wheel B, as just hereinbefore mentioned.
When it is desired to wind the watch, the stem or arbor D is turned around in the direction shown by the arrow in fig- 1, and the contrate-wheel a, hom actuated by the contrate-wheel d, in contact therewith, turns the ring, which turns the spur-wheel A, and consequently rotates the spring-barrel, to the spindle a of which the said spur-wheel is attached. Instead of be'ing moved in one direction, as just set forth, the stem or arbor D- may be turned alternately -in opposite directions, the contrate-wheel d yielding to allow itto bc'turned back toothed ring (L p 7 When it is desired to set or adjust the hands of the watch the pin g is forced inward, which brings the wheel d away from the wheel 0, thus bringing the wheel 01 into gear with the wheel B, and allowing the stem D to turn within the wheel a without operating the same, which being done, the stem D is turned in one direction or the other, as the case may require, and operates the wheel B to bring the hands to the desired position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The toothed ring 0, in combination with the; spur-wheel A of the spring-barrel, and' the contrate-wheel c attached to the winding-stem or arbor, substantially and for the purpose herein set forth.:
F. s. GILES.
