TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I. JOHN D. ANDERSON, of Corry, in the county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in -Car-Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthis specification.
This invention relates to a new andimproved method of coupling railroad ears, and it consists in providing a peculiar shapedlink and draw-head, and operating them in a novel manner, as will hereafter be described.
Figure 1 represents two cars coupled together with my coupling.
Figure 2 shows the two draw-heads with thelinclincd hooks and links detached, but incomplete.
Figure 3 is a top view of the same, showing the two draw-heads coupled together.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the draw-heads, B the coupling-link, C the coupling-hooks. 'l'hc hook C is formed on and makes a part of the draw-head. The upper forward portion of it forms an inclined plane, which serves to guide the link and raise'it up so that it will drop over the hook, as seen in figs. 1 and 3. a represents a projecting lip on the side of the draw-head, which, as the cars come together, strikes the tail of the link and throws it from the position as seen in fig. 2, so that it drops over the hook as in figs. 1 and 3. The link is of peculiar formation. It is not a full link, but onl link-shaped at one end. The parts of the link are not connected at the other end, but one part is drawn out and bent, as represented and marked d. This part or tail of the link strikes lip a, which movement trips the link and couples the cars. Ordinarily it would not be necessary to place the link in the position shown in fig. 2, as it would naturally stand in nearly a horizontal position, for the back portion of the part 01 (and also the opposite part) is supported by a little ledge or projection, e, on each side of the draw-head, and the horizontal portion of the link is supported by a pin,'g, which passes through the drawhead. The link is prevented from dropping down, when in or near a verticalrposition, by a little circular projection which is attached to it at h, and which forms a bearing forit when in that position, as seen in fig. 2. J
represents stands, which are attached to the truck or car-frame to support the link when thrownback, as in fig. 2.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The construction and arrangement of the link B fitting over the hooks C upon the upper side of the drawheads, said links catching over the pins g and prevented from slipping, when in a vertical position, by means of the circular projections h, and coupled by means of the bent a-rm d striking the projection a upon the draw- .heads, as herein shown and described.
