Description
@uitrit taire pet'rnt @Hirsi GARR-ET VLIE'l, OF MILWAUKEE, 'WISCONSIN A SSIGNOR TO WILLIAM VLIET, OF GREEN LAKE COUNTY, WISCONSIN.A
Letters Patent No. 65,140, lated May 2S, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT I GATES FOR WATER-WHEELS.
TO ALL WHOM I'l 'MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GARRET VLIET, of the city and county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gates for Water-Wheels; :ind I do hereby declare that the following i's a full, clear, and exact description thereof, wliichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of' this specication, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a Wheel-cese and gate.
Figure 2, a sectional view of the wheel-case, with the gate removed.
Figure 3, section of case and gate, with part of gate-rim broke away.
Figure 4, vertical sectional view.
Figure 5, circular lgate.
Similar letters of reference in each of the figures indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to let the water into oren to a vwheel on several sides at the same time, and with equal force on all sides, and this I do by constructing a Arim of the proper width or height, with openings through it to let water to the wheel. This rim encloses the \vheel,and curved strips or plates of metal, attached to abutments which form the outer structure of the casein which the Wheel runs, project through the openings of the rim, so that when the rim or gate is turned in one direction, the openings in it are uncovered, letting water through to the wheel, and when turned in the opposite direction the openings are closed, shutting the water of?.
A, wooden case; Bwntcr passages; C, circular gate; D, metal stripsvor plates projecting through theopenings invgnte C; E, metal ring over strips D; F, metal ring under strips D, und inside of gate C; G, bolts holding rings E and F firmly to metal strips D; H, pinion meshing into segment on the ange of gate C, with which to open and shut the gate; I, handle with which to turn pinion H.
Operation: Turn handle I and the gate is opened or closed, as may be desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Solid metai gate C, with water'ports through it, metallic water guides D, projecting through the ports in gate C, and curved at their inner ends, to conform to the shape of the wheel, for the purpose of giving the water the proper direction; metal rings E and F, bolts G, and pinion H, all arranged and combined substantially as and for thepurpose described.
GARRET VLIET.
