V NITED JEAN MOLAS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
MOTOR-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 651,197, dated June 5, 1900.
Application filed March 9, 1899. Serial No. 708,399. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEAN MOLAS, a citizen of France, residing at No. 247 High road, Queen Annes avenue, South Tottenham,London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor-Oars, (for which I have applied for a patent in Great Britain, dated February 8, 1899, No. 2,850; in France, dated February 8, 1899, No. 273,649; in Germany, dated February 8, 1899, No. 12,962 II/20, and in Belgium, dated February 8, 1899, No. 110,314,) of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to a motor-car propelled by an engine of any suitable kind or by an electric motor so arranged that it can operate as a tractor, being attached to an omnibus or other suitable vehicle, so as to take the place of horses or other draft-animals, as I shall describe, referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a side View. Fig. 2 is a front view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan.
a is the underframe, which has four bearings b, two for each of the axles e of the drivin g-wheels d, these two axles being connected through a differential gear e of ordinary kind. At each end of the underframe a there is a pedestal f, which supports a circular platform g for the driver. In the pedestals f are bearings for the ends of the shaft h, which may be, as shown, a crank-shaft having a pair of cranks Worked by a pair of engines or may be the shaft of an electric motor without cranks, the engines or motor being carried by the platform g. On the middle of this shaft is fixed a pinion i, which gears with teeth on the periphery of the box which incloses the differential gear and has bearings for the bevel-pinions. A ring it is carried on springs Z, resting on the pedestals f, and it has part of its internal circumference toothed to gear with a pinion m on a vertical steering-shaft. The ring 70 is attached by angle-brackets n to the front of the omnibus or vehicle which it is intended to draw. Rollers 0 p serve to guide the platform g horizontally and vertically as it revolves within the ring it when the pinion 2' is turned for the purpose of steering. On the axis of the rollers 19 are hooks g, which engage over a rib projecting from the ring k and prevent it from being raised too high by the springs Z.
It is to be understood that for the purpose of driving the engines or motor of the tractor there may be on the vehicle which it draws stores of compressed air or gas or accumulator-batteries; but as I make no claim to any engines or motors or means of working them I do not show any of these details on the drawings.
Having thus particularly described and ascertained the nature of this invention and the best means I know for carrying the same into practical effect, I claim 1. A tractor or motor-car having an underframe provided with bearings for two driving-wheel axles, pedestals mounted on a frame and carrying a circular platform arranged to support a driving-motor, a surrounding ring in which the platform revolves, said ring being arranged to be secured to the vehicle, a steering-wheel mounted on the circular platform and having toothed engagement with the ring, and a driving-shaft mounted in the pedestals and arranged to actuate the front axles; substantially as described.
2. A tractor or motor-car, having an underframe provided with bearings for the drivingwheel axles, a driving-shaft mounted in the underframe and connected with the axles, a circular platform secured to pedestals mounted on the frame, a motor carried on the platform, a surrounding ring within which the platform revolves, guide-rollers for the platform, and spring-s u pports for the ring mounted on the pedestals the platform having a steering-pinion engaging with the ring; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JEAN MOLAS.
