GUSTAF ARVID ANDERSON, OF WAYNESBOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA, AS- SIGNOR TO THE GEISER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
VALVE-GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,890, dated June 5, 1900. Application filed September 30, 1899. Qerial No. 732,172. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAF ARVID ANDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesborough, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Gears; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to valve-gears provided with shiftingeccentrics; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the valve-gear. Fig. 2 is a side View of the valve-gear. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on the line x (I? in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the reversing-sleeve.
A is the engine-frame.
B is the crank-shaft, journaled in the frame, and a is the crank-plate.
O is a carrier for the eccentric, secured on the shaft B.
D is the eccentric, which is slidable in the carrier crosswise of the shaft B. The eccentric-strap d is mounted on the eccentric and is provided with an eccentric-rod d. The rod d is pivoted to an arm I) on the rock-shaft c. The rock-shaft c has an arm a, which is pivoted to the valve-spindle c. The rock-shaft is journaled in bearings in the frame. If desired, the rock-shaft can be dispensed with, and the eccentric can be connected with the valve-spindle in anyother approved manner.
All the above parts are of approved construction, and the slidable connection of the eccentric with its carrier is more fully shown in the patent to myself, dated February 9, 1897, No. 576,751.
The eccentric D is provided with a laterally-projecting lug E, and the valve is reversed by moving the center of the eccentric from one side of the center of the crank-shaft to the other. In the drawings the eccentric is shown in its middle position.
F is a reversing-sleeve which revolves with the crank-shaft and which is slidable longitudinally upon it. This sleeve is preferably splined to the crank-shaft.
G is a lever, one end of which is pivoted to the lug E on the eccentric by a pin g. The other end of the lever G is pivoted to fulcrum- 5 5 links H by a pin 9, and the fulcrum-links are pivoted to a lug h on one side of the sleeve F by a pin h, so that the lever G can move longitudinally of the shaft 13.
I represents links which are pivoted at one end to the sleeve E by pins 1' and which are'pivoted at the other end by a pin 2" to the middle part of the lever G. The links I are longer than the fulcrum-links and are arranged to clear them. The eccentric is moved crosswise of the shaft when the reversing-sleeve is slid longitudinally on it by means of the links I.
The links I are the actuating-links which move the lever G, and the lever G has a movable fulcrum in the pin g, said pin being carried by the fulcrum-links h. By the use of this device very little side strain is thrown on the eccentric in the act of movingit across the shaft, so that it slides very freely, and this result is accomplished by the use of very few working parts and connections. Single links I and h might be used; but it is preferable to arrange them in pairs.
J is the reversing-lever for sliding the reversing-sleeve on the shaft. One end of the lever J is pivoted to a fulcrum-link j by a pin j. The linkj is pivoted to a bolt or pin 7a, which passes through an elongated hole In in the frame A. The elongation of the hole k permits the position of the fulcrum-pin j to be adjusted, so that the position of the reversing-lever can be regulated. The free end portion of the reversing-lever is provided with any approved catch mechanism for retaining it in position. 0
The reversing-sleeve F is provided with a flange or shoulder f, and 'm is a ring provided with a recess m, which engages with one end of the sleeve F. Anumber of thin annular plates at are arranged in the recess m, and p are bolts for securing the ring on to the sleeve.
P is a ring arranged between the ring m and flange f, and p are pins which pivotally con nect the ring or block P with the loop of the reversing-lever. When the sides of the ring or block P become worn, one or more of the thin plates at are removed to permit the ring m to be set up closer to the flange f.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. 111 a valve-gear, the combination, with a shaft, and an eccentric slidable crosswise of it; of a slidable reversing-sleeve, a lover provided with a movable fulcrum and pivotally connected to the said eccentric, and a fulcrum-link and an actuating-link each connected to the said sleeve and lever at different points and constraining the said lever to slide the eccentric when the reversing-sleeve is moved longitudinally of the shaft, substantially as set forth.
2. In a valve-gear, the combination, with a shaft, and an eccentric slidable crosswise of it; of a reversing-sleeve slidable longitudinally of the shaft, a lever provided with a movable fulcrum and pivoted to the said eccentric at one end, a pair of fulcrum-links pivoted to the said sleeve and to the other end of the said lever, and a pair of actuating-links longer than the fulcrum-links and pivoted to the said sleeve and to the middle part of the said lever, substantially as set forth.
3. In a valve-gear, the combination, with a shaft, and an eccentric slidable crosswise of it; of a reversing-sleeve slidable longitudinally of the shaft, a lever provided with a movable fulcrum and having its ends pivotally connected with the said sleeve and eccentric respectively, and an actuating-link pivoted to the middle part of the said lever and to the said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
4. In a valve-gear, the combination, with a frame,a shaft journaled therein, and a reversing-sleeve slidable longitudinally on the said shaft; of a fulcrum-link, an adjustable pivot for the said link supported by the said frame, and a reversing-lever pivoted to the other end of the fulcrum-link and operatively connected with the said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
5. In a valve-gear, the combination, with a framc,a shaft journaled therein, and a reversing-sleeve slidable longitudinally on the said shaft and provided with a flange; of a ring provided with a recess engaging with one end of the said sleeve, removable plates arranged in the said recess, fastening devices for securing the said ring to the sleeve a reversinglever pivotally connected to the frame, and a block pivoted to the said lever and arranged between the said ring and flange, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUSTAF ARVID ANDERSON.
