Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SHIVELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oarnegie, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania; haveinvented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Bars for Tie-Plates, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention'described herein relates to certain improvements in the manufacture of plates having ribs on one side, such as tieplates for use under rails, and has for its ob ject the shaping of an ingot or billet by su ccessive passes through suitable rolls or by other suitable means into a bar or blank having ribs along one side and with flanges aloiig its edges extending beyond or outside of the ribs.
Ingeneral terms the invention consists in displacing, by the action of suitably-shaped rolls or by other suitable means, the metal along the middle portions of the opposite sides of an ingot or billet, thereby forming two pairs of ribs projecting from opposite sides of the body portion of the bar, gradually increasing the relative height of one pair of ribs by further displacement of the metal of the middle portion of the bar until the thickness of the body portion has been reduced to or approximately to that of said ribs, and simultaneously inclining or beveling one or both Walls of the other pair of ribs, and finally spreading out the first pair of ribs into the plane of the body portion, thereby forming flanges projecting beyond or outside of the ribs having'the inclined or beveled sides.
The invention further consists in rolls havingpasses, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed- In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a view in elevation of rolls having a portion of the passes constructed for rolling tie-plates in accordance with my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing rolls having the final passes.
In the practice of my invention the first pass A of the rolls is so shaped or constructed that the metal along the middle portion of the opposite sides of the ingot or billet is displaced, portions of the displaced metal flowing laterally and vertically to form ribs a a and b I) along the edges on opposite sides of the ingot or billeti The second, third, and fourth passes B, O, and D are so shaped or constructed as to continue the reduction of the body portion c in thickness, thereby increasing the projection of the ribs from the body. The thickness of the ribs a a is not aifected .in these passes except in so far as may be necessary to obtain the required draft to elongate the ribs equally with the body por tion. The portions of the surfaces of the rolls operating on the inner Walls of the ribs 1) b are constructed to impart a bevel or incline to said Walls, thereby reducing the thickness of the edges of said ribs at each pass. The fifth pass E is so constructed as to reduce the thickness of the body portion a to or ap} proximately to that of the ribs a at and also to 'efiect a working or bending of the ribs outward, so that they will be at an angle greater than a rightangle to the body portion. The sixth pass is constructed to Work the ribs a ct outward and down into the plane of thebody portion and preferably Without any material reduction of thickness beyond that incident to giving the rollsthe bite on the article necessary to move it through the rolls. In this pass the outer walls of the ribs 1) b are also beveled or inclined, so as to give such ribs a symmetrical wedge shape in cross -section;
The last pass is constructed to work or bend the ribs a a into alinement with the body por tion 0, forming flanges or lateral extensions of the bar or blank.
It will be understood by those skilled in .the art, that the number of passes, in the shaping of the ingot or billet to the com pleted' bar, maybe varied by changing the dimensions of the passes in the roll, and the height of the'ribs may be changed as desired by'changingthe depth of those portions of the passes in which the ribs are formed,withoutdeparting from the spirit of my invention.
It is characteristic of my method that the directions of the flow of metal in all passes is not materially different from thatrorigiriafte d in the first pass, and hence the resulting bar is free from all injurious strains. It is also characteristic of my improvement that the projection of the flanges beyond the ribs and the depth of the latter can be regulated at will. It is further characteristic of my improved method that a greater projection of the flanges can be obtained than in any of the methods now in use.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. As an improvement in the art of forming bars for ribbed plates, the method herein I described, which consists in rolling up and down oppositely-projecting ribs on opposite sides of a bar and then bending the ribs of one side of the bar out and into alinement with the body of the bar, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improvement in the art of forming bars for ribbed plates, the method herein described, which consists in displacing the metal along the middle portions of opposite sides of an ingot or billet, causing portions of the displaced metal to flow outwardly and vertically, thereby forming ribs on opposite sides of the body portion of the article and finally bending the ribs of one side of the mcnt with the body portion, substantially as set forth.
