TOOL FOR SHAPING AND SIDE-DRESSING SAW-TEETH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,788, dated May 29, 1900.

To all whom, it may cortar/3772:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. AIKEN, a resident of Wellsville, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Shaping and Side-Dressing Saw-Teeth; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact 'description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to tools for shaping and side-dressing the teeth of saws, and has for its object to increase their efficiency and economy.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective of the improved tool. Figs. 2 and 3 are opposite views ofa central section passing between the tool-jaws. section in the plane of thel handles. Fig. 5 isv a plan. Figs. 6 and 7 are perspectives of detachable dies. Figs. 8 and 9 are perspectives of a tooth-stop, and Fig. '10 is a perspective of an eccentric pin.
It will be understood that Figs. 1 to et, in-
clusive, show the tool inverted as respects its operative situation.
4 and 5 indicate handles for opening and closing the jaws to operate suitable dies, and 6 is a guide comprising an arm having a slot 7 in alinement with the space between the jaws. The guide 6 is fastened to the outside of jaw 2 by screws 6. The jaws are operatively connected by the medium of arms 8, which arms are loosely supported by an eccentric pin 9 passing through the jaw 2, the parts being held in proper relation endwise the pin by spring-pins 10 and set when adjusted by a screw 9. The opposite ends of the arms are loosely connected to the handle Eig. 4. is a 16 denotes dies detachably secured in the 6o proximate faces of the jaws by screws 16. They are provided with portions variously beveled, as at 17, 18, 19, and 20, to adapt them for shaping and dressing dissimilar teeth.
In jaw 2 is a stop 21, having a projection `21 to determine the position of the saw-tooth.
It is adjustably fastened in a suitable seat in jaw 2 by means of a screw 22, abutting against va shoulder 23.
The jaw 2 has a sliding connection with jaw 1 at 3 to permit the die-plates 16 to closely hug the saw-plate.
In operation the tool is applied to the toothed edge of a saw, so that the guide kG embraces it. The .pin 9 is turned to tighten `the jaws on the saw-blade, and said pin is then set by screw 9. The stop 21 is suitably adjusted by screw 22 to vary the swaging effect of the dies, which determines the gage.
The handles are then used to force the dies 16 against the tooth to shape and press it.
The improved tooth shaper and side-dresser Vdispenses with springs and also avoids the necessity of using a side le. By its use the swaged tooth can be pressed into perfect and uniform shape. The dies straighten the tooth and at the same time compress the swaging to any desired gage, tapering it in both di rections from the point, giving a perfect clear-A ance with the face and point the widest. The dies press the surplus steel to the front of the tooth and obviate the necessity of filing. One set of dies can be used to shape four differ ent styles of teeth. v
Having thus described my invention, I clain1` 1. In a tool for side-dressing saw-teeth, the jaws, dies secured in the jaws, arms for opening and closing the jaws, and an eccentric being adjustable with respect to the jaw iirst named, the devices for adjustment comprising the arms, the sliding connection of the jaws, and the eccentric pin connecting a jaw and arms.
1L. In a tool for side-dressingsaw-teeth, pivotally-connected jaws, dies fixed in the jaws, a handle pivoted to one of the jaws, arms pivoted to the handle, and an eccentric pin connecting the arms and the other jaw, as and for the purposes stated.
5. In a tool for side-dressing saw-teeth, jaws, dies fixed therein, means for moving said jaws to and from each other, and a toothstop iiXed in one of the jaws adjacent the die, and a screw cooperating with the stop and the jaw, whereby operation of the screw will adjust the stop.
