TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, R. W. BIGGS, of Jacksonville, inthe county of. Duval, and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful improvement in Plouglls; and I do hereby declare the following-t0 be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part-of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved plough; and
Figure 2, a'perspective view of the slotted stock and its adjusting-plate.
Similar letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a slotted stock, pivoted to a suitable beam, with a point or share and a stationary semicircular adjusting-plate in the construction of a plough.
In theaccompanying drawing, A represents the beam of a plough constructed after any approved pattern, and provided with handles B, secured thereto in any suitable manner. To this-beam I pivot a slotted stock, (1-, by means of a bolt and nut, a, fig. 2, in such manner as that the slot 8 shall be parallel with the beam. The lower end of the stock is so curved forward as to receive and support closely the ploughshare or point to be secured thereto; and the share or point is secured to this lower end of the stock byv means of a bolt passing tlirough the slot- 8, and fastened by a nut: This mode of fastening admits of'a vertical adjustment oftheshare or point uponthe stock, this adjustment-serving, by means of the curve of the lower end'of said stock, to determine the inclination at which the point shall enter the soil, and the pitch at which it shall work. As the curve of both stock and point are made to coincide, the support of the point is equally elosc in all its adjustments. The movement or play of the stock upon its pivoted connection to the beam A allows 'anadjustment thereof to any desired inclination, it being secured, when so adjusted, by means of a semicircular plate or bar, D, which passes through the upper end of the slot 8 in the stock, and is secured at either end to the beam of the plough. This plate D is pierced with holes at regular intervals, to receive a bolt, 0, passing through an aperture in the stock, pierced transversely across its slot, the bolt being secured, after it has been thus inserted through the stock and plate to hold the former, by means of a nut screwing thereon. This adjusting-plate not only allows of an adjustment of the stock to set its point for deeper shallow Work, but serves also as an effective brace therefor.
Having thus fully described my invention, I do not claim the use of a slotted stock admitting of a vertical adjustment of the point or share; nor do I claim pivoting the stock to admit of an adjustment of its inclination; but whatI do claim thereih as ne w, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the slotted stock 0, point or share E, and semicircular stationary adjusting-plate D, with each other and with a suitable plough-beam A, substantially inthe manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
The foregoing specification of my improvements in plonghs signed by me this day of A. D. 1867.
V R. W. BIGGS.
