UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
umssn LArtAen, or New ORLEANS, LOUISIANA,
CENTRIFUGAL F'lLTERlNG-MACHlNE.
SPECIF'IGATION formingpart of Letters I atent No. 659,402, dated May 29, 1900.
Application filed July 27, 1899.
To all 11:71.01 H may concern:
lie it known that I, Umssu LAPLACE, a v
, ings, in whicl Figure 1 is a diametrioal section of a centrifugal. machine embodying a drum constructed in a'cordance with my lilVBllUOlL,
nular filter-b dy of the drum. Fig. 3 is a circular filter-st ,neiwhich is permeable to water V. v and is designgd to form part of the drn in when water is to b filtered.
Referring y letter to the said drawings,and more partieullarly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, A is the casing. of a centrifugal machine, B a shaft jon'rnaled in the bottom wall of the same, and adrum fixed on the shaft to be rapidly revolved by power applied to the latter. G indicates the perforated cylinder, which is usually arranged in the easing,and H the wiregauze, arranged on the inner side of said cylinder. The drum in the preferred embodiment of the invention is made up of a base u,' fixed on the shaft B and having an upweirdly-disposed flange I), a crown or crownannulus c, havinga depending circular flange (I, an adjustable connection which is preferably formed by rods 6, connected to the base a and loosely" extended through apertures f in the crown-annulus c, and nuts mounted on the upper threaded ends of the rods, and an annular and rigid filter-body D of a diameter to snugly fit within the flanges b d of the base and crown-annulus.
The filter-body D comprises a receptacle h, of sheet-brass, copper, or other suitable material, having inner and outer foraminated walls ij and a preferably imperforate annular bottom wall 7.: and a filling-Z01. some suit- S pectivel y.
Serial No. 725,317. (Nn nnrlelfl body 1) andithebase a and crown-annulus, re-
These gaskets serve to'preclude' the escape of liquid between the ends of the filter-bod y D and the base a and crown-am 'nnlus c and compel all of the liquid which leaves-the drum to pass through the said filter-body -As illustrated in Fig. l, the machine is designed lnore especially'for filtering oil, wine, and like liquids, the liquid being placed in the drum and said drum being rapidly re vol'v'ed by power'applied. to shaft B,'so as. to force the liquid through the filter-body D,
and thereby effect a thorough separation of sediment -''and foreign particles therefrom"; The sediment and foreign. particles in the liquid are caught and held in th" filtering of .the machine to remove such filtering materi a1 and replace it with fresh material, The
construction described admits of this being;
quickly and easily accomplished, it being, simply necessary when the filtering material is choked by sediment and impurities tog-re -material, and hence it frequentl becomes necessary in order to maintain the efliciency 8Q move the nuts g and crown-annulus c fremthe rods e and then lift the filter-body'D as a-whole out of the machine and dump the filtering material from the receptacle h. The
said-receptacle h is then filled with fresh filtering material and the filter is replaced and secured between the base a and crown-annulus 0, when the .maehi ne is again ready for use. 1 A
When it is desired to filter water, the filter bodyD is removed from the machine and its place is taken by the rigid filter-body or filterstone D, (shown in Fig; 3,) which is permeable to water. The said filter-body orfilterstone may be annular in form, like the filterbody D, or in the form of a circular vessel,
as shown in Fig 3. In the latter case the lower gasket E 1s not essential, but is preforably emphryed in order to lessen the liability of breakage when the filter-body or filter-stone is clampedbem'een the base and crown-annnlus.
Like the filter-body D the filter-body.or filter-stone I) is susceptible of being readily removed, cleared of'sediment, and replaced in the 'mz'ichine, and when it is employed the e'l'ficienoy of the machine may be maintained for an indefinite period without the employ" ment of new materials.
It will be appreciated from the foregoing that both embodiments of myinvention are very simple, inexpensive, and durable and that-when a conduitis arranged to continuously discharge liquid into thedrrun C no attendant is n cessary. it will also l)e 'appreciaied that b'euanscoifthefacility with'which the filter-body may be'removed,cleaned, and replaced the lnflQlllllO need not be idlembnt a ver'short limm whieh is an important advantage.
, I indicates a brake,- which may comprise an arm-J, hingedat its outer end to a lug K, rising from the side of the casing and having its opposite or inner end provided with an, under socket or seat L for the reception of a block M of sn liable material. such as leather, wood, or the like. This blue or shoe may be swung on itshinge-joint so asi'o be thrown outwardly when not in use, and when it is;
1'. The eombinationfin the drum of a een- -tr ifngal-machine, of a base, a erowm'a conneotion between saidbase and erown, and an annular filter-body interposed-between the base and crown and removable. therefrom; jsaid filter-body comprising a receptalemade up of inner and outerforaminated walls'and;
a bottom permanentlyeonnectedtosaid inner'and outer walls, andfafillingof filtering material arranged therein, substantially as specified.
2. A filter-body, for use inithe drums of centritugal machines, comprising an annular 1 receptacle made up of innerand outer fol-aminated walls, and a bottom permanently conneeted to said inner and'enter walls, and a filling of filtering material arranged.- in said receptacle and removable 'therefrmn, su'bistantially as specified. V
'i In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presehee'of two subscribing witnesses. 4
