Wijzen-waff n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALADAR von FERDINANDY, on BULKESZ, AUs'TRiA-HUNGAEY.
HORSE-DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 650,353, elated my 22, 19Go. Application tiled J'nne 27, 1899. Serial No. 722,212. (N0 mvdel To all whom it may concern: l
Beit known that I, ALADAR VON FERDI- NANDY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing at Bulkesz, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented a certain new. and useful Improved Device for Rapidly Detaching Runaway Horses from Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to devices for rapidly detaching runaway horses from the vehicles to which they are harnessed; and it consists of the details of construction hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In order to render the present specification more easily intelligible, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the severalviews.
Figure l is a perspective view of one form of the invention. Fig. l is a detail plan of the bell-crank-lever mechanism for operating the pole-chain-releasing mechanism; Fig. 2, a front elevation of a modified form., showing the front part of the housing removed to more clearly show the mechanism; and Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 2, showing the housing in horizontal section.
A is the springtree-bar, and B the pole, ,of the cart or carriage. To the brackets c c are attached the eyes of the trace-poles, as at d d', by means of the .pivot-bar o, which passes through the said brackets.
At d the strap attachment is shown as used in connection with carriages and light conveyances, while d shows the usual metal eye as used with carts and dray-wagons. e and e' indicate the corresponding attachments for the trace-bars. The bar o o3 extends along the springtree-bar and has its end o3 hooked, so that a movement of the whole bar to the left of the ligure, looking from the front end of the pole, will cause the pivots of the trace-bar eyes to be moved out of the brackets, and consequently the horses, with the traces and trace-bars, will be released immediately. The bar o o3 is moved by means of the lever g, pivoted at Z, the lower end of which passes through a slot in the said bar or is connected thereto by a pin-and-slot connection and the upper end of which (not vbe evident from Fig. 1.
shown)`extends upwardly in proximity to the box-seat or other part of the carriage.
In order to simultaneously disengage the' pole-chains from the collars orV breast-straps of the horses, the following mechanism is provided: The downwardly-turnedv fork-shaped ends e" i2 of 4the bar c' move in recesses B' B2 of the carriage-pole and operate, in combination with the lateral pole-recesses m and m', to secure the rings of the pole-chains, as will Y The rear end of the bar i is pivoted at lo to the pole, close to the lower end of the lever g', which latter extends down through a slot lo in the arm of the bellcrank lever h. Thus when the lever gis 'manipulated to release the trace-bars, asA previously described, the end of the said lever g will move the bell-crank lever h in a horizontal plane around its pivot k, as indicated in full and dotted lines at Fig. la, and will con'- sequently exercise a pull on the bar t', by which means the ends t" will be withdrawn from the recesses m m and the pole-chains will be released,'so that the horses will be entirely'disengaged from the carriage or cart.
In the modification shown at Figs. 2 and 3 the bar o is divided into two bars/'0'V and 02,
vhaving their inner ends provided with teeth or formed to racks on adjacent sides, so as to engage a centrally-mounted pinion F. The latter is mounted 'at the end of the lever G, which in this case is revolubly supported in the carriage, and has its lower end extending downwardly into the housing s. The pinion F is broad enough to allow the rack a', formed in the loop-like extension a of the end of the bar z', to engage it below or above the racks o o2, and the lever or bar G may be provided with a crank-handle at the top, (not shown,) as will be readily understood. When the bar Gis turned, the racks will move in the reverse directions and the bar t' will be pulled to the rear of the pole, so that the trace-bars and the pole-chains will all be released simultaneously. This may either be done by hand or by means of a coiled spring R, mounted in the lower part of the housing s and separated from the upper chamber by means of a horizontal partition-wall s. One end-of this lspring is attached, by means of a bolt or the like r, to the interior wall of the housing and IOO the otherend to the spindle G, and any suitable means may be employed to hold the spring compressed, so that on releasing the same the spindle G Will be turned, and thereby release the horses, as specified.` In the modication shown at Figs. 2 and 3 the ends of the bars o o2 may be made exactly alike, since in this case the bars are moved in opposite directions, so that the hook-like end, as at o3 of Fig. l, is no longer necessary.
I claim as my invention- 1. A device forreleasing.runawayvhorses.
polechains, and means for shifting the springtree slide-bar and exercising a .pull on the pole-rod simultaneously in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. In a device for releasing runaway horses, combination of slide-bars mounted on the springtree-bar to form retaining-pivots for Ythe; trace-bars as specified, racks at the end of said bars and a vrotary pinion to engage said racks, a'rod extending along the carriage pole and having bifurcated end to slide in recesses of the pole end and form pivots for the Ypole-chains, and a rack at the rear end of said pole-rod' to engage the pinion aforesaid, and a'holsing to guidethe said pinion and racks and means for turning said pinion in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described. f
In testimony whereof I have hereunto lset my hand in the-presence of two Witnesses.
ALADAR VON FERDINANDY.
