To all whom, it may concern: Be it known'that I, GEORGE FOSTER PEAR- SON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and- State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Moving Cars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of the invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of same, the advanced positions of the car-wheel and of the moving device being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device as applied, the lever being in raised position. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 000:, Fig. 2, with the lever in lowered position. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of my invention.
The object of the invention is to provide a competent lever device for moving cars on railway-tracks; and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A represents the hinge-grip and fulcrum, B the lever or lever-socket, and O the automatic chock 0r trig. The hinge-grip consists of two jaws cl cl, each havinga side wall, from which project inward a horizontally-extending series of hinge-knuckles e, which are perforated for the passage of the journal-bolt g, which is made hollow to receive the rod 0 and spring sof the automatic trig. The jaws d cl have their fulcru ms upon the rail tread through the knuckles thereof, the knuckles of each jaw being extended beyond their pivot to form a fulcrum edge. The knuckle-hinges of the jaws are intervening or mutually intercalated, as shown. Below the series of hinge-knuckles the jaws are provided with lateral horizontal grooves or biting edges h of proper shape to engage the lateral edges of the rail, and above said knuckles thejaws are provided with the loosely-fitting inwardlyflaring f ulcrum-bearings 7.: for the journals Z of the lever or lever-socket B, to the end of which is pivoted the shoe or pinch-blockm, having a concave bearing-surface it suitable for engagement with the car-Wheel; The hinge-knuckles of said jaws are extended underneath the said pinch-block and support same when lowered in position to engage the car upon the next stroke of" the operating lever.
The journalsl are made long enough to hold their bearing in the fulcrum-perforations when the jaws are somewhat spread apart at their upper portions.
The knuckles of the hinge being somewhat inclined downward and inward when the jaw-walls are in vertical position project at theirinner ends beyond their pivoted middle portions in such a manner as to form lever extensions, (indicated at 2,) which when pressure is brought to bear on the jaws in action on the rail cause said jaws to approach each other by their lower or grooved portions in such a manner as to forcibly grip the rail. This is due to the action of the pivot of the operating-lever, which has both journal and lever bearings in the jaws d d, the depression of said pivot acting to rock the jaws upon the rail-tread as a center to close to the rail. In this waythe fulcrum is made secure by the same lever-pressure which is operating through the pinch-block in engagement with the car-wheel to move the car. As the wheel moves forward the wedge-shaped trig 0, actuated by the spring engaging its rod '1', also moves forward under the wheel and chocks it, holding it securely against backward movement when the limit of the stroke has been reached and the lever disengaged for another g etdss action. The jaws in opening hinge upon the lever-pivot as it is raised atthe outer smaller ends of their bearings for said pivot, thus falling outwardly, such action being made possible by the inwardly-flaring bearings of said lever-pivot in said jaws.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a car-moving device, the combination of the two rail-gripping lever-jaws pivoted together, and having their fulcrums upon the tread of the rail, and independent of their pivot, and the lever pivoted to said jaws, whereby upon operation of said lever when in engagement with the car, said jaws are rocked upon the rail-tread as a center to close, substantially as specified.
2. In a car-moving device, the combination of the two rail-gripping jaws, having the inwardly-extending knuckles pivoted together,
and fulcruming upon the rail-tread upon the. side of their pivot opposite their respective jaws, and the lever pivoted to said jaws, substantially as specified.
3. In a car-moving device, the combination of the two rail-gripping lever-jaws pivoted tov gether, and having their fulcrums upon the tread of the rail, the lever pivoted to said jaws, whereby upon operation of said lever when in engagement with the car, said jaws are rocked upon the rail-tread as a center to close, and means for opening said jaws, substantially as specified.
4. In a car-moving device, the combination of the two rail-gripping jaws, having the inwardly-extending knuckles pivoted together, and fulcruming upon the rail-tread, upon the side of their pivot opposite their respective jaws and the lever pivoted to said jaws, the pivot thereof having inwardly-flaring bearings in said jaws, said jawsbeing weighted to automatically open from the rail to normal position upon raising the pivot of said lever, substantially as specified.
5. In a car-moving device, the combination of the two rail-gripping jaws pivoted together, and having their fulcrums upon the rail-tread, and their rail-gripping portions norm allyseparated from the rail, the lever pivoted to said jaws, the pivot of said lever having journal and lever bearings in said jaws, whereby upon depression of said lever when in engagement with the car, said lever-pivot will act to rock the jaws upon the rail to close thereto, sub= stantially as specified.
6. In a car-moving device, the rail-gripping jaws, the tubular pivot therefor, and the automatic trig or chock, having its rod extended through said pivot, substantially as specified.
Z. The combination with a lever or leversocket of thefulcrnm-jaws, their hinged 1ever knuckles, and rail gripping grooves or edges, hollow journal, inclosed spring and the trig having its rod extending through said journal and engaging said spring, substantially as specified.
8. In a car-moving device, the two rail-- gripping jaws, having their fulcrums upon the tread of the rail, the tubular pivot for said jaws, the automatic trig or check, having its rod extended through said pivot, and the le ver pivoted to said jaws, substantially as specified.
