Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 6,492, dated June 5, 1849'.
Toall whom, may concern:
Be it known that we, FENNER BUSH and JULIUs H. PRATT, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Manner of Constructing Combs; and we do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had -to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view, and Fig. 2, a transverse section.
XVe construct a comb-by our improved process-of two comb plates a, a, having their inner edges beveled olf and united to each other by two strips b, Z2, placed opposite to each other over the beveled edges of the plates, and united by a series of rivets passing through the strips and through the beveled edge of each comb plate, as represented in the drawings. By means ofthis our improved manner of manufacturing combs, we are enabled to make the teeth of the opposite sides of an ivory comb, of different degrees of ineness, and at the same time make use of the most suitable quality of ivory for each ,-to wit. Fine grained ivory for the line teeth, and coarse grained for the coarse teeth: it being deemed of very great importa-nce by manufacturers, that ivory should be used in this manner in the construction of combs.
Combs made by our improved process, are much stronger than those made in the usual manner, and also more tasteful and elegant in their appearance. fe are enabled also, to make use of scraps and small pieces of material to the best advantage by our improved mode of manufacturing combs.
lVhat we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The constructing a comb of four pieces of ivory`or other material-united substantially in the manner herein set forth; to Wit. Two comb plates a, a, having their inner edges beveled olf, and joined to each other by means of the two strips b, placed opposite to each other, over the beveled edges of the plates, (a, a,) and connected by a. row of rivets passing through the centers of the strips and through the beveled edge of each comb plate, as described herein and represented in the accompanying drawings.
