IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR. MAKING PEAT CHARCOAL. I
TO ALL 'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that LilnuEs B. LYONS, of the town and county of Litchfield, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements, a Machine or Apparatus-for making Charcoal and Coke from Peat; and the following. is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- 4 Figure 1 represents a side sectional elevation, showing the furnace, cylinder, gas-conductor, and fire-fines.
Fig-tire 2 shows a sectional end view of the furnace and revolving cylinder. v
Figure 3 shows an outside view of the whole apparatus for making charcoal or coke from peat.
Figure iisan endview of the same. I
The object'of my invention is to manufacture coke and charcoal directly from the peat-bog or crude peat, as an article for smelting ore and for refining metals, as well as making a cheap and clean fuel for domestic use, an article not inferiorfor any purposeto the best mineral coalor charcoal made from wood. My invention consists in construction of a heating furnace having a revolving cylinder, in which the crude peat is placed to be converted into charcoal or coke by the flame, it being ignited gas in the fire-box which surrounds the cylinder, there being a pipe from the cylinder connecting with the fire-box to convey the gas as it is being generated, where it is consumed with the other fuel, thereby making the best quality of coke and charcoal from crude peat in a very economical manner.
That others may be enabled to make and use myiuvention, I will describe it more in detail, referring to, the, drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
I make the cylindcrA of boiler iron, of any desired dimensions, and fit it on to flanged heads a a made of cast iron, which are provided with semicircular openings b b, in which the peat is put to be converted into coke or charcoal, and also taken out when it is done, the openings 6 I) being provided with circular sliding lids c a, so fitted in the heads a a as to be tight when closed, the cylinder A being supported on friction-rollers e e at both ends, which are placed on the outside of the large cast-iron plates B B, which form the ends of the furnace D, and through which the endsof. the cylinder A project sufliciently tovget their bearings-onthe rollers e e having the flanges a a outside. At one end of the cylinder A, underneath it, are the fire-box a, grate d, and ashspit, constructed in the usual manner, the flueE Ebeing so formed that the flame may fill the entire spaee surrounding the cylinder A, and the surplus flame and heat be conveyed through the flue f in the arch F to the smokc staclg G, as indicated by the arrows. In the centre of one of the cylinder-heads A is fitted the pipe), in such a manner as to allow the cylinder A to be turned over as often as may be required, the portion of the pipe 72' which is inside of the cylinder standing perpendicular, and extending to near the top of the cylinder A, so that none of the contents of the cylinder, except the gas that is being generated, will be likely to get into it, as the cylinder is being revolved to change the position of its contents. The pipe It being carried down on the outside of the plate B at the bottom, an elbow is turned at a right angle, so as to carry the pipe it' through the plate to admit 'the gas which-is generated in the cylinder directly into the fire-box C at near its door or opening 0', whence it, coming in contact with the fire and the oxygen of the atmosphere through the draught of the furnace, takes flame and supplies much the greater part of the fuel needed to keep the coking and cooling apparatus in operation. In the opposite end of the cylinder A the flanged end-a has a projecting hub, j, in the centre, with holes, in which to insert a bar, It, to turn the cylinder as often as necessary while in operation. Under the elbow h of the gas pipe I; is a bulb or vessel, on, with a stop-cock, n, in the under side,- for the purpose of reecir'ingthe condensed products of the crude peat which is distilled, and drawingit oil to save for other uses. I The mode of constructing my apparatus for making charcoal and coke from crude peat or peat-bog is, as abovedescribed, by placing the cylinder A in the cast-iron end-plates B B, the flanges resting on the friction rollers c e c c; then, having long iron rods 00 to hold them the proper distance apart, set into theiire box O and flue-door plate H, filling up the space I, not occupied for the fire-box, with brick or earth, and then brick up the sides DDto a height even with the top of the cylinder A; then place cast-iron curved ribs i2, and arch over with a. single brick edgeways, leaving the fluesfFf, and then covering the whole with an arch of brick, in which the smoke-stack K may be erected to any desired height Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A revolving cylinder, constructed andarranged as herein described, for making charcoal and coke rectly from the crude or bog-peat, substantially as herein set forth.
2. I claim constructing a furnace with cast-iron ends, and a'fire-box, in and over which is a revolving 'lindcr made of boiler iron, fitted and supported on friction-rollers to enable it to be easily turned to change .e position of the material inside.
3. I claim the pipe h, as arranged, for conducting the gas from the cylindei-Ainto the fire-box C to supply cl for operating, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
4. I claim the flanged heads a it with semicircular openings 6 and sliding covers a, in combination with the wolving cylinder B, friction-rollers c e, and fire-box'C, as constructed for converting crude peat into charcoal 1d coke, substantially as described.
5. I claim the gas pipe 7 the bulb or vessel m, stop-cock 12-,in combination with the furnace C'and cylinder all arranged and operating substantially in the manner as and for the purposes herein seLforth.
6. I claim the mode of constructing the double arches supporting. the brick on ribbed curved bars, so as to :ave a longitudinal flue the whole length of the furnace-for saving the heat from the flame generated from the is in the cylinder, as set forth. I g
