UNITED STATES PATENT Trice.
ORLA Il. \VATKINS, OF CLINTON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO J. K. MILNER & (30.,
' OF SAME PLACE.
END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 645,241, dated March 13, 1900. Application filed January 23, 1900, Serial No. 2,526. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLA H. WATKINS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful End ranged in approximately a horizontal position to form a shoveling-board and also to be hinged at the top and freed at the bottom to permit the latter to swing outward, so that the contents of the wagon-body may pass beneath the end-gate.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of an end-gate anda wagonbody constructed in accordange'with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one side of the wagon-body, showing the end-gate in a vertical position. Fig. 3 isa vertical sectional view, the parts being arranged in the position illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 isa horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view, the end-gate being arranged for dumping.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a wagon body or bed designed to be provided at the inner face of each side 2 with vertical cleats 3, forming a way for a slide 4, consisting of a Wooden bar and provided with an angle-iron bar 5. The angleiron bar 5 has one of its sides or flanges secured to the inner or front face of the slide 4, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4 of the accompanying drawings, and the other side or flange of the angle-bar is ofiset from the slide 4 and arranged contiguous to the adjacent side edge of an end-gate 6. The space between the offset side or flange of the angle-bar and the slide 4 receives a lever 7 and a link 8, pivoted together at 9 and similarly connected with the slide and with the end-gate. Theoffset side or flange of the angle-bar is provided with upper andlower slots 10 and 11, receiving upper and lower studs or projections 12 and 13 of the end-gate 6, the studs or projections beingpreferably headed, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The lower slot is inclined and forms an open bearing for the lower stud or projection, which forms a pintle for the end-gate when the latter is swung downward to the position illustrated in Fig. 1 to provide a shoveling-board. The upper slot is vertical and is provided with a narrow entrance of sufficient width'to permit the shank or stem of the headed stud or projection to pass through it when the end-gate is swung downward to form a shoveling-board and when it is returned to a vertical position.
The lever 7 is provided with an ear 14, extending from one end of it at right angles and pivoted to an ear 15 of the slide 4 by a rivet 16 or other suitable fastening device, whereby the .lever is fulcrumed on the slide 4. The link, which is fulcrnmed on the end-gate by a pivot 17, is provided with a perforated ear arranged similar to that of the lever and receiving the pivot 17. \Vhen the lever and the link are arranged together, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, they operate as a bell-crank lever and are held together by lips 18 and 19, located near the fulcrum-point and arranged, respectively, at opposite sides of the lever and the link. The lip 18 of the lever is shorter than the lip 19 andextends laterally a sufficient distance to engage the edge of the link, and the lip 19 of the latter is elongated and extends over the face of the lever, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The ear of the slide 4 is arranged approximately at the center thereof, and when the lever is swung downward to a vertical position its short arm, formed by its ear, is arranged back of the fulcrum, whereby the end-gate is securely locked against outward movement. The outer end of the lever is provided with a laterally-extending flange 20, which engages the link at the upper edge thereof when the end-gate is arranged in a horizontal or slightly-inclinedposition, as shown in Fig. 1, and it prevents the joint from breaking inward or downward and forms a solid brace of the link and the lever.
hen the end-gate is in a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 3, the lever and the link are adapted to beswung upward to within a short distance of the top of the end-gate to permit the latter to swing downward; but by swinging the lever upward to the position shown in Fig. 5 the upper headed stud or projection is carried above the entrance of the slot 12 by the action of the said lever, its short arm or ear being arranged in an inclinedpoj sition and being adapted to lift the end-gate slightly to lock the upper lug or projection 10 in the slot and to free the lower stud or projection 11 from the lower slot or hearing 13 to permit the end-gate to swing outward to dump the contents of the wagon-body. The lever is locked in this position bya pivoted hook 21, mounted on the upper portion of the offset side or flange of the angle-bar of the slide 4 and adapted to engage a notch or recess 22 of the latter. When the parts are arrangedin this position, the pivot 9, which connects the link to the lever, forms the pintle of the end-gate and sustains the latter.
The end-gate is provided at opposite sides with the usual wings, and it may be constructed in any suitable manner, the headed studs or projections being preferably mounted on plates,'as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
When the lever is locked by the hook 21,
the end-gate will be held in position by the same; but the upper slot and the upper headed stud or projection prevent the end-gate from swinging outward while the levers are being swung upward to such elevated position.
It will be seen that the end-gate is adapted to, be readily arranged to form a shovelingboard and to permit the contents of the wagon-body to be dumped or discharged beneath it and that the lever and the link operate to lock the end-gate securely in its closed position and that the pivot which connects them forms the pintle on which the end-gate swings when the same is arranged for dumping. It will also be apparent that the upper slot and the headed stud or pro,- jection prevent the upper portion of the endgate from swinging outward beyond the wagon-body when the lever is swung upward to free the. lower end ofthe end-gate and to arrange the same for dumping.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
