Application filed October 4, 1899.
To all whom it may concern:
. Beit known that I,- CONRAD ADOLF WEBER- MARTI, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Streulestrasse 3, Zurich, in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pressure Gas-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for open ing and closing low-pressure conduits for gas or other fluid or liquid (hereinafter referred to as. gas) from a distant point of actuation by means of the compression or exhaustion of air or other fluid or liquid (hereinafter referred to as air) andis characterized by the provision at a suitable point in the conduit of the gas of a chamber connected both to the conduit of the gas to be controlled and to the supply of the controlling-air and of a piston having a flow-through channel serving to communicate with the throughway of the conduit and adapted to work hermetically in the chamber crosswise of the conduit and to .be moved, with its flow-through channel, into or out of communication with the throughway of the conduit by the com-- pression or exhaustion of the controlling-air acting in the chamber.
The accompanying drawings represent the invention applied, by way of example, to a gas-burner.
Figure 1 represents the device in sectional elevation, showing the same open for the through-passage of the gas. Fig. 2 represents a like View in part, showing the device closed, so as to prevent the through-passage of the gas; and Fig. 3 represents a side ele- Vation, partly in section.
B represents a gas-conduit which is adapted at b to be screwed onto a gas-supply pipe and is formed with two through ways or passages 19 b, crossing each other-at right angles. The
' throughway 1) serves for-the passage of the gas to the point of ignition or use and the throughway b serves to receive a piston 0, having a peripheral groove 0 and by means of which the passage of the gas through the throughway b is permitted or prevented, as required. supply and exhaust apparatus (not shown) by a pipe d, while the other end of such throughway is closed by a cap I), having suitable packing b and communicates with the outlet-passage b bya duct b made in its upper wall.
When it is desired to perm-it of the passage of the gas through the channel 1), air is forced through the piped into the adjacent end of the chamber 6 and causes the piston O to assume the position indicated in Fig. 1, which allows of the gas passing the peripheral channel c, and when it is desired to prevent the passing of the gas through the channel 1) air is exhausted from the chamber 1) through the pipe d, when the atmospheric pressure, acting on the other end of the piston, causes the latter to assume the position indicated in Fig. 2, which prevents the gas from passing the peripheral channel 0. From the lower part of the throughway b a conduit 11 leads to the igniting device, which consists of a gas-nozzle n, above which is fitted an air and gas mixing tube d, having an airinlet d and fitted at its top with a removable burner d (or there formed as a burner,) having a less bore than that of the mixing-tube to prevent the Bunsen flame from striking back.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In apparatus for opening and closing low-pressure conduits from a distant point of actuation, in combination, a conduit for the gas or other fluid or liquid to be controlled, a chamber b intercepting the conduit-throughway and always communicating at one of its ends with such throughway, by means of a duct 12 made in the upper wall of the chamber, a piston 0 serving to close such throughway and having a flow-through channel 0 serving to open such throughway and adapted to work hermetically in the chamber 1) crosswise of the conduit, and means in connection with the other end of the chamber to that lastly referred to for forcing air or other fluid or liquid thereinto and exhausting the same therefrom so as to operate the piston, as set forth.
2. In apparatus for opening and closing conduits from a distant point of actuation, in
combination, a conduit for the gas or other fluid or liquid to be controlled, an open-ended chamber 12 intercepting the conduit-through- Way and always communicating at one of its ends therewith, by means of a conduit b made in the upper wall of the chamber, a packed cap 1) serving to close such end of the chamber, a packed coupling b serving to close the other end of the chamber, a piston 0 serving to close the conduit-throughway and having a flow-through channel 0 serving to open such throughway and adapted to work hermetically in the chamber b crosswise of the conduit, and means in connection with the coupling-fitted end of the chamber for forcing air or other fluid or liquid thereinto and exhausting the same therefrom so as to operate the piston, as set forth.
3. In combination in a gas-burner regulated from a distance, a conduit for gas, a chamber 1) intercepting the gas-throughway and always communicating at one of its ends with the outlet part thereof, by means of a passage 19 made in the upper Wall of the chamber, a piston 0 serving to close such throughway and having a flow-through channel 0 serving to open such throughway and adapted to work hermetically in the chamber b crosswise of the conduit, means in connection with the other end of the chamber to that lastly referred to for forcing air thereinto and exhausting the same therefrom so as to operate the piston, and a conduit 6 leading from the supply part of the conduit-throughway and having a gas-nozzle.
