HECTOR T. FEITTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PEN N SYLVAN IA. Letters Patent No. 64,513, dated llfay 7, 1867.
IMPROVBMENTIN STEAM (tentamens.
@Ligt Stimuli referat tu in tinte teitens ttnit mit making tart nt tige stmt.
TO AIJL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HECTOR T. FENTON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in Steam Boilers; `and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention` consists of certain improvements in steam boilers, fully described and claimed hereafter, whereby a rapid generation of steam and `thorough superheating of the saine is insured and priming prevented.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make und use my invention, I will now proceed to describe r its construction and operation. On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved steam boiler.
Figure 2, a transverse vertical section.
Figure 3, an exterior front view.
Figure 4, a plan view; and
Figure 5, a plan view of the inner due.
A is the outer cylindrical casing or shell; B the inner casing, forming `the central vflue C; the two casings being connected together at'the top by the annular plate a, and at the bottom by the casing b ofthe fire-place D, and the bottom plate c of the boiler. Within the inner casing B are arranged radially a number of vertical tubes, theA upper and lower bent ends of which are so connected toJtheA casing B that the tubes may have a free communication both above and below with the water-space of the boiler. The number of tubes E Will-ofcourse i depend in a great measure upon the dimensions of the casing B. 0n the top a of the boilerare secured four l boxes, which `are separated from the steam space of thevboiler'by platesfof wire gauze, 'or its equivalent, and from each box projects a pipe, Gr, communicating with a superheating vessel, H, which is situated directly above the central flue, and from which projects the steam pipe e. It should be-understood that the boxes F, pipes G, and vessel H, arecontained within a suitable casing, terminatingl in a flue through which the-products of comn bustion are carried off to the chimney; this casing may be of the form represented by red lines, fig. I. The fire-box is provided with a suitable grate, I, and with-appropriate flre-doors, and the boiler has the other ordinary i appliances, which it will not be necessary to enumerate. By the concentration of the products of combustion in the central flue, an intense heat is there produced, and to this heat are exposed the tube B and the vertical pipes E, thelatter partially intereepting the products of combustion; hence there must be a rapid generation of steam at this point. As the superheating chamber is situated directly above the central flue, it must receive suicient heat to eiect the desired purpose; at thesame time it is situated so far above the boiler that the access oi" water to thelvessel by foaming is rendered dilicult. Foaming, however, is rendered impossible bythe boxes F and wire gauze or perforated plates f; for should any water gain access to the boxes it would be impossible for it to escape from the larger box into the smaller pipe. The number of boxes and pipes G may be greater or less than is shown, and, although I prefer a superheating Achamber oi' spherical form, it may be of a diierent shape.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The cylindrical boiler, its fire-box D, central Hue C, and pipes E, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as-and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination of the above, with a superheating chamber, H, situated above the central tine and communicating through pipes with the steam space of the boiler. Y
The boxes F, separated from the steam space by wire gauze, or its equivalent, and pipes G, less in size than the boxes.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses:v
HECTOR T. FENTON.
Witnesses: y CHARLES HowsoN,
W. J. R. DELANY.
