and useful Rope Valve-Cup, of which the following is a specification. t
My invention relates to valve-cups for packing for pump mechanisms, and particularly for those pumps designed for use in deep wells in pumping oil, saltwater, doc. and the object in view is to providea simple, strong, and durable packing ring or cup adapted to withstand rough usage to which devices of this class are exposed and to resist the effect of the liquids, the same being of a sufficientlyyielding quality to form an efficient contact with the inner surface of the working barrel of the pump and at the same time sufficient strength to resist the crushing effect of the liquids. 1 i
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following descrip' tion, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In thedrawings, Figure 1 is a side View of aportion of an oil-well-pu mp piston provided with packing-rings constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View in perspective of the improved packing cup or ring. Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail View showing the cord or fibrous wrapping partly unwrapped to expose the lining, of canvas.

In the preferred embodiment of my invention the packing ring or cup consists of a body portion of fibrous wrapping 1, such as hemp or cotton cord, provided with inner and outer coatings 2 and 3, of rubber cement or dental rubber, while within the body portion is a lining i, of canvas or similar material, preferably consisting of one or more wraps held in place by the inner coating of cement. In the construction of the ring the lining is first applied to a mandrel in the form of a is applied. pressure by any suitable means forming no strip 'of canvas, with the warp running parallel with the axis of the mandrel, and hence parallel with the axis of the ring or cup when finished. One or more wraps of the canvas strip may be made about the mandrel, after which the inner layer or coating of cement is applied. Secondly,-the cord or other mate rial which is to form the fibrous wrapping is coiled around the mandrel upon the lining, the coil starting from the bottom of the cup and progressing toward the upper edge thereof. From the foregoing description it will be seen that with the exception of the stiffeningring which is employed in connection with the rim or flange at the bottom of the cup the entire device is composed of flexible ma terial and that while the Warp of the lining extends vertical or parallel with the direction of movement of the packing-ring when in use the fibrous wrapping which forms the body of the ring extends spirally. Thus the lining serves to counteract any tendency of the coils of cord or other wrapping to separate,
while the absorbent quality of the cord provides for expansion of the ring, and hence an effective contact of the exterior surface thereof with the wall of the pump-barrel;
also, it is obvious that the upper edge of the cup or ring is sufficiently flexible or yielding and having the body portion partly composed I of a fibrous Wrapping located mainly near the enlarged terminal and provided with an outer coating of rubber substance and a lining of textile fabric, the fibrous Wrapping being spirally disposed, and the outer portion of the inturned part of the Wall havinga 111etallic ring embedded therein.
