CHARLIE BURGESS COOKS TON, OF PARAGOULD, ARKANSAS.
AUTOMATIC CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,897, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed October 5 1899- To aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that LOHARLIE BURGESS CooksTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paragould, in the county of Greene and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Car- Oouplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled ling with the jaw'open and in position for coupling. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the locking-jaw closed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line of the 1ocking-shaft. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the locking-jaw and shaft removed from the draw-head and shown in relative locked positions.
1 denotes the draw-banand 2 the draw head, the latter having formed upon its floor and projecting upwardly therefrom a stopledge 2 to limit the forward oscillating movement of the locking-shaft, which will be hereinafter described. 7
3 denotes the knuckle-jaw fulcrumed on the vertical bolt 4, fixed in the front end of the draw-head. l
5 denotes the tailpiece, which terminates in an angular shoulder 6, below which is a toe 6, that inclines downwardly from its forward to its rear end.
7 denotes the locking-shaft, which is mounted in a horizontal position in the draw-head and is formed with an eccentric section 8, having a transverse shoulder 9,'Wl1i(3h projects into the path of movement of the shoulder 6, while the periphery of the eccentric section projects into the'path of movement of the toe 6, This locking shaft is so mounted Serial No. 732,642. (No model.)
with respect to the ledge 2, which extends only a short distance across the opening in the draw-head, that when the coupling is set in the position shown in Fig. l the eccentric section of the shaft will be supported upon said ledge, while a portion of the eccentric section will project beyond the ledge, so that when the tailpiece swings inwardly and its toe 6' strikes the under surface of the eccentric section it will rock said eccentric section upwardly in a direction reverse to that when it moved downwardly'upon said ledge, and after the too 6 has passed entirely from. under the eccentric section said section will drop, with its end 9 immediately in advance of the shoulder 6, and thereby lock the knuckle-jaw in closed position. This ledge forms a very important part of the invention, as it serves to hold the eccentric section in proper position to be engaged by the toe 6, and also serves as a stop for the eccentric section and prevents it being rolled in a rearward direction when struck by the said too.
12 denotesa crank-arm on the projecting end of the locking-shaft, by means of which said shaft is manipulated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination with a draw-head having a ledge projecting slightly upwardly from the floor thereof and part way across the same, of the knuckle-jaw pivoted in the draw-head and having a tailpiece formed with an angular shoulder 6 and a beveled or'inclined toe 6, and a locking-shaft formed with an eccentric'seotion which is adapted to rest upon the ledge and have one end thereof project beyond the inner end of the ledge and formed with a shoulder 9, which, when the knucklejaw is in closed position, is in the path of movement of the shoulder 6 of the tailpiece, while the periphery of the overhanging por tion of the eccentric section is in the path of movement of the said toe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
