lINrTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MYLES YOUNG WARREN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND-RAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,883, dated March 6, 1900.
Application filed October 5, 1899. Serial No. '72J631l (N0 model-l Z aZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYLES YOUNG WAR- REN, of Philadelphia, (Germantowm) in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved IIand'Rake, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to farm and garden implements; and its object is to providea new and improved hand-rake arranged to permit of conveniently and quickly discharging the gatheredmaterial'from the teeth of the rake.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondingparts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of theimprovement, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig.
3 is a like view of the same, with the cleaner in a discharge position and Fig. 4 is a plan View of the cleaner.
The rake on which the improvement is applied consists of the usual handle A, a crossbar or back 13, carrying spaced teeth 0, and a suitable brace 1), extending from the handle to the cross-bar or back B, as indicated in On the teeth 0 of the rake is movably held a cleaner E, preferably in the form of a link made from a single piece of round iron or wire and normally held in an uppermost position by a spring-leverF, so that the cleaner E when in this position does not interfere with the gathering and accumulation of hay, grass, or other material.
The lever F is preferably made from a single piece of wire bent to form two oblique arms, each having a loop F, engaging the cleaner E, as is plainly shown in the drawings, and each arm has two members F F, of which the members F are secured by a staple G to one side of the rake-handle A, the extreme end of the member being formed with atransverse lug driven into the rake-handle. The other members F extend over a cross-arm H, carried by the rake-handle, said cross-arm being the fulcrum for the lever F. The connecting end F of the members F of the lever is adapted to be locked to the top of the handle A by a ring .or loop I, fulcrumed on the under side of the handle, so as to hold the loops F of the lever in an uppermost position, together with the cleaner E. (See Fig. 2.) r
Now when the operator swings the ring or loop I out of engagement with the connecting end of the members F then the resiliency of the spring-lever causes a downward move ment of the cleaner E to slide the latter on the teeth -to nearly the lower ends thereof, thusmoving all the gathered material oif the rake. The upward swinging movement of the members F of the lever F is limited by a link or loop J, fulcrumed on the handle A, somewhat at the rear of the fulcrum bar or rod II. By this arrangement the cleaner E is not liable to be moved off the teeth 0 of-the rake.
After the material is discharged the operator simply presses the connecting end F of the members F downward to swing the lever F upward and to move the cleaner E back into an uppermost normal position. is then looked in place on the topof the handle A by the loop or ring I. again in condition for using it for its legiti The end l The rake is now mate purpose-that is, for gathering the ma- Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters -Patent- 1. A rake, provided with a cleaner movable on the teeth of the rake, a spring-lever fulcrumed on the rake and engaging said cleaner, to move the latter up or down on the raketeeth, and means for locking said spring-lever, to hold the cleaner in an uppermost position, substantially as shown and described.
2. A rake provided with a cleaner movable on the teeth thereof, a spring-lever fulcrumed on the rake and provided with oblique arms engaging the cleaner, and means for locking the spring-1ever to the rake-handle, substantially as described.
'3. A rake provided with a cleaner movable on the teeth thereof, a spring-lever fulcrumed on the rake and formed with oblique arms, each having a loop through which the cleaner passes, and means for locking the spring-lever to hold the cleanerin an uppermost posiits handle, of a cleaner in the form of a link through which the teeth project, and a springlever bent to form oblique arms, each having a loop at its end through which the cleaner passes, and formed of two members, one member of each arm being fixedly secured to the rake-handle and the other members of the arms being connected, the connected end of the said members extending through one loop of the handle and adapted to have the other loop of the handle swung over it, substantially as described,
