To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY PANHORST, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county'ofAllegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Disk Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in valves and relates particularly to that class known as disk valves.
My invention also relates to valves of the class known as cutoff, and the object is to provide a simple and cheap construction whereby the valve-disks may be seated firmly and with accuracy, and to provide improved means for seating the valve-disks without sliding friction, and to provide means wherebythe parts of the valve mechanism may be readily disconnected for repairs or cleaning.
Briefly described, my invention consists of two vertically-movable valve-disks, operated by means of a stem extendingthrough the cap or dome of the valve. These valve-disks are provided on their inner faces with bearing-lugs and are operated by means of a wedge-block engaging the Valve-stem,the said block fitting neatly in a socket in the one valve-disk, while in the other valve-disk the socket receiving the block is of a size suflicient to allow of a partial movement of the block before the disk is operated.
The invention further consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved valve with the valve-disks in the elevated or open position. Fig. 2 is a like view of a portion of the valve with the valvedisks closed. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional View of a portion of the valve, showing the valve-disks open. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the valve-disks removed. Fig. 5 is a detail side view of one of the valve-disks, showing the wedge-block and a portion of the valve-stem. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the wedge-block.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 indicates the casing of my improved valve, having lateral openings 2, contiguous to which are arranged the removable valveseats 3. The valve-casing 1 has mounted thereon and secured thereto by bolts 4 4: or other suitable means a cap or dome 5, in which is mounted for rotation a valve-stem 6, having a screw-threaded portion '7 and a suitable handle or operating-wheel 8. The cap or dome 5 and the supporting portion of the casing 1 therefor have formed on opposite sides of their inner faces guidew'ays 9 and 10 to receive guides 11, secured to the periphery of the valve- disks 12 and 13. These valve-disks are each provided on their inner faces with oblong bosses 14; and 15 to form sockets 16 and 17 for the reception of the wedge-block 18. This wedge-block has formed integral therewith an interiorly-screw-threaded sleeve 19 for the reception of the screw-threaded portion of the valve-stem (5. These valvedisks 12 and 13 alsocarry on their inner faces bearing-lugs 20 and 21, four of which are provided on each valve-disk, the lugs on the one valve -disk having concave bearingfaces, which engage convex bearingfaces on the lugs of the opposite valve-disk. The bearing-faces of these lugs are inclined, so as to permit the movement of the valve-disks away from each other, as will be hereinafter described.
The cap 5 has formed integral with the inner face of its top or secured thereto a pair of Vertical guides 22, against which the valve-disks engage and by which they are guided during their operation. The valve disk 12 has formed on the lower edge of its periphery a projection or lug 23, adapted to arrest the movement of the disk 12 previous to the completion of the movement of the disk 13. The socket 17, while of an equal length to that of the socket 16, is somewhat wider, in order that the wedge-block may move there* in and the valve-disk 13 may complete its movement after the movement of the valvedisk 12 has been arrested. To permit the wlisks 12 and 13 will be carried downward until the projection or lug 23 comes into engagement with the bottom of the valve-casing, thereby arresting the movement of the valve-disk 12. At this time the guide 11 on the valve-disk 13 has reached the inclined or tapering portion 21 of the guideway 10, and the wedgeblock, traveling in the enlarged socket 17, carries the disk 13 downward therewith, and the pressure being entirely upon this disk 13 at this time causes the inclined bearing-lugs to separate the same from the disk 1 2 and force it outwardly against its seat 4. Upon the reverse rotation being imparted to the valve-stem G the wedge-block, by reason of its being at all times in engagement with the bosses on the disk 13,'elevates this disk alone, drawing the same to its position between the guides, at which time the upper part of the wedge-block has come into engagement with the upper part of the boss on the valve-disk 12 and the disks are elevated simultaneously within the casing and cap or dome.
By the arrangement of the inclined bearing-lugs the valve-disks are forced outwardly firmly against their seats when the valve is closed, and by permitting the movement of the wedge-block within the socket of the disk 12 previous to its engagement with the boss of this disk to lift the same the disk 13 is returned to its normal posit-ion, so as to be readily drawn upward between the guides.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a valve-casing having opposite valve-seats, of a pair of valvedisks having bosses forming sockets on their inner faces, said sockets being of unequal size, a wedge-block fitting neatly within the socket of one disk and adapted to move vertically within the socket of the opposite disk whereby one of said disks is moved in advance of the other, a valve-stem mounted for rotation in the val ve-casing and engaging said wedge-block, a cap or dome secured to the valve-casing, a pair of guides secured to the top of the valve-disks and adapted to operate in gnideways formed in the valve-casing and cap or dome, a pair of guides 22, suspended from the cap or dome and adapted to engage the inner faces of the valve-disks, said Valvedisks being provided on their inner faces with abutting bearing-lugs, the lugs on one valve-disk having concave faces adapted to receive the convex faces of the lugs on the opposite valve-disk and one of said valvedisks having a projection formed integral with its periphery at the lower side thereof and adapted to engage the valve-casing to arrest the movement of said val ve-disk previous to the seating of the opposite val ve-disk, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a valve casing having opposite valve-seats, of a pair of valvedisks having oblong bosses on their inner faces forming sockets, said sockets being of unequal size with a wedge-block fitting neatly within one socket, and loosely within the opposite socket, a valve-stem mounted for rotation in the valve-casing and engaging said wedge block, a cap or dome secured to the valve-casing, guides secured to the periphery of the valve-disks and adapted to operate in guideways formed in the valve-casing and cap or dome, a pair of guides suspended from the cap or dome, said valve-disks having abutting bearing-lugs and one of said valvedisks having a projection adapted to engage the valve-casing to limit the movement of the same before the opposite valve-disk has completed its movement, substantially as described.
