Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. MAGEE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of London, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burners, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to gas-burners or any like device, but is particularly advantageous when used in connection with a Bunsen burner or one consisting, essentially, of atube so arranged that air is drawn in through openings at the base, where it unites with the gas; and this invention consists of a device for controlling and regulating the gas and of a supplemental supply-regulating device, both of which assist in controlling and regulating the gas, so that it passes smoothly and without noise to the burner-tube and it also consists of an inverted perforated cup and plate, with or without perforations, which regulates the speed or rate of flow of the gas passing to the burner-tube in such a manner that the speed or rate of flow of gas of high pressure is reduced and the speed or rate of flow of gas of low pressure is increased; and it also consists of an automatic regulating device which prevents the burner from being affected by sudden fluctuations in the gas-pressure; and it also consists of the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter first fully set forth and described and then pointed out in the claims.
The object of this invention is to avoid and prevent the injuring of mantles and glasses of incandescent gas apparatus when attended by inexperienced persons.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a burner embodying my invention. In this view the screen over the air-inlets is removed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail central sectional view of same, showing the screen over the air-inlets. Fig. 3 is a detail central sectional and side view of the burnertube. Fig. 4 is a detail central sectional and bridge-plate, and the automatic regulating device. Fig. 7 is a detail central sectional and side view of the inverted cup and plate adjustable thereon. Fig. 8 is a detail central sectional and side view of the jam-nut.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 2 designates the body, the lower end of which is connected with a gas-supply pipe, (not shown,) and this body 2 is provided with a transverse opening 3, located in which is the controlling and regulating device 4, and in this body 2 the series of passages 5, the socket 6, and the air-inlet 7 are formed.
8 designates a passage, 9 a chamber, and 10 a series of passages formed in the controlling and regulating device 4, and 11 a nut adapted to be screwed on one end, which, together with the flange 12 on the opposite end of said controlling and regulating device 4, holds the latter in the body 2 and at the same time holds said device, so that when it is rotated the series of passages 10 will be adjusted in line to or from the passages 5 in the body 2, and a projection 13 on the body 2 engages with a re cess 14 in the device 4, by which unnecessary movement of the latter is avoided.
15 designates a supplemental controlling de- .vice which is adjusted in the socket 16 of the controlling and regulating device 4 to par tially or wholly open or close the passage 8, and 17 are wings with which the device 4 is provided. These form a convenient means whereby it may be readily and easily adjusted.
18 designates a burner-tube provided with air-inlets 19, and this burner-tube 18 is secured to the body 2 by a screw-thread on its outer face engaging with the screw-threaded socket 6 of said body 2.
20 designates an inverted cup or thimble the closed end of which is provided with a perforation or perforations 21 and the opposite end with the annular rim-flange 25.
22 designates a plate which may be solid or in which a perforation or perforations 23 may be formed, as found most suitable or convenient. Preferably a perforation or perforations corresponding with the perforations 21 of the cup or thimble 20 are formed in said plate, and the latter is pivotally secured to the perforated end of the inverted cup or thimble 20 by the pivot 24. Obviously this cup 20 may be in the form of a ring, sleeve, or collar having a perforated plate secured to or formed integral with the upper end thereof in combination with an adjustable plate similar to the plate 22, which may be either solid or perforated, as before described, and I contemplate this construction to be an equivalent to my inverted perforated cup or thimble 20 and plate 22 just previously described.
26 designates a bridge-plate provided with openings 28 and with a central screw-threaded socket with which the screw-threaded lower portion of the stem 27 en gages,and this bridgeplate 26 is shown in the form of a perforated disk with a screw-threaded socket therein; but, if desired, it may be in the form of a narrow central imperforated cross-bar or bridge in which a screw-threaded socket is formed, the space between the bridge and the wall of the body 2 permitting the passage of the gas.
29 designates an automatic regulating device which moves vertically on the stem 27, and this stem 27 is provided with a shoulder 31 to prevent device 29 becoming detached therefrom and also to prevent said device from completely closing the openings 21 in the cup or thimble 20 and with a sleeve 32, which encircles the stem 27 to firmly and safely hold the automatic regulating device 29 at right angles to said stem and parallel with the upper perforated face of the inverted cup or thimble 20, and 30 is a hollow jan1-nut screw-threaded on its outer face, which is screwed into the lower end of and engages with the screw-threaded socket 6 in the body 2.
33 designates a screen of wire or othersuitable material placed over the air-inlets 7 of the body 2 to avoid and completely prevent the ingress of moths, insects, or other objects into the burner-tube at this point.
34 designates a set-screw which extends through the body 2 and binds on the burnertnbe 18 to prevent the accidental displacement or disarrangement of the latter when properly adjusted in relation to the body 2.
The supply of gas to this burner is turned or on bya valve in the supply-pipe. (Not shown.) The gas then passes into and through the passage 8, chamber 9, and passages 10 in the controlling and regulating device 4, through passages and socket 6 in body 2, through the hollow jam-nut 30, perforations in plate 26, below the inverted cup or thimble 20, through the perforations in the inverted cup or thimble 20 and plate 22, adjustable thereon, andinto the burner-tube 18. As the gas passes through the passage 8 the supply to chamber 9 is regulated by the supplemental regulating device 15, and as the gas passes from chamber 9 through the passages and 5 it is regulated and retarded by turning the controlling and regulating device 4, which reduces the pressure of the gas passing to and through the series of passages 5, and this retardation assists in causing said gas to pass smoothly into the body 2 and through the hollow jam-nut 30 and perforated plate 26 into the inverted cup or thimble 20,
and the supplemental device 15, regulating the flow of the gas through passage 8 to chamber 9, together with the operation of the device 4, which controls and regulates the retardation of the gas as it passes into body 2, assists in causing said gas to pass smoothly into the body 2 without noise. The controlling device 4 will therefore be used to retard the flow of gas of high pressure, the supplemental regulating device when the pressure of the gas is slightly above normal, and both when a medium pressure of gas is indicated.
The perforated plate 22 on the inverted cup or thimble is for the purpose of regulating the speed or rate of flow of the gas passing out through openings 21 in the cup or thimble 20 as follows: By adjusting the plate 22 to decrease the area of these openings 21 greater speed orrate of flow is given to gas of low pressure and assists in causing it to become more thoroughly incorporated with the air from the air-inlets 7 and 19 to form a perfect combustion, and by adjusting the plate 22 to increase the area of the openings 21 the gas of high pressure passes out with less speed or rate of flow, and this, together with the retardation of the gas caused by the controlling and regulating device 4, permits the gas to pass smoothly to and through the burner-tube and avoids and completely prevents all noise by gas, indicating the most excessive pressure, and this plate 22, together with the retardation of the gas by the vertically-adjustable regulating device 29, which rises in the inverted cup orthimble 20 automatically by the pressure of the gas, re lieves the burner from being affected by sudden fiuctuations in the gas-pressure, so that gas of any pressure may be retarded and regulated to pass smoothly to the burner-tube without noise, and when set to gas of a certain pressure all variations of that pressure will be met by the automatic regulating device 29, so that by using a burner embracing these improvements a steady even flame without noise will be the result, and by rotating the burner-tube 18 in the body 2 the solid portions a of said burner-tube may be adjusted opposite the open portions 7 of said body 2 and the open portions 19 of said burner-tube opposite the solid portions 12 of the body 2 to regulate the quantity of air ontering the burner-tube 18 to combine with the gas passing out of the inverted cup or thimble 20 to cause a perfect and complete combustion of said gas, and preferably the relative sizes of the openings 19 and 7 and the closed portions (1 and b of the burner-tube 18 and body 2, respectively, are such that at no time will the air be completely shut off from entering the burner-tube.
The regulation of the admission ofair into the burner-tube necessitates the rotating of the burner-tube 18 and the consequent raising or lowering of said tube 18 in the-body 2, and to hold the inverted cup or thimble 2O and automatic regulating device 29 at the same relation to the openings 19 in said tube the jam-nut 30 has also to be screw-threaded outward, so that the shoulder 25 of the cup or thimble 20 and the plate 26 will be bound between the lower end of the tube 18 and said jam-nut 30 and be firmly held in place and in the proper relation to the burning-tube.
I have found byexperiment that the construction herein shown and described gives the best results. At the same time the different parts may be formed of any suitable size or shape and of any suitable material, and in regard to the form and position of the controlling and regulating devices shown they'may be of any form or shape, so that while I prefer the construction shown and described I do not Wish to limit myself to the details thereof, as they may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a gas-burner, the combination with a body provided with an interiorly-screwthreaded chamber, a controlling and regulating member journaled in the body below the chamber, and also provided with a chamber having an inlet and a series of outlets, and a supplemental regulating device in the inlet; of a hollow jam-nut secured in the chamber in the body above the inlets, a bridge-plate resting on said jam-nut, a stem secured to the bridge-plate, a regulating device on the stem, an inverted perforated cup surrounding the stem and regulating device, and resting on the bridge-plate, and a burner-tube engaging the screw-threads in the chamber, and surrounding the cup, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a gas-burner, the combination with a body provided with an interiorly-screwthreaded chamber, a controlling and regulating member journaled in the body below the chamber, and also provided with a chamber having an inlet and a series of outlets, and a supplemental regulating device in the inlet; of a hollow jam-nut secured in the chamber in the body above the inlets, a bridge-plate resting on the jam-nut, a stem secured to the plate, a regulating device on the stem, an inverted perforated cup surrounding the stem and regulating device, and resting on the bridge-plate, a flange on the cup, and a burnertube engaging the threads in the chamber,surrounding the cup and resting on the flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a gas-burner the combination with a body provided with a chamber having a series of gas-inlets, and an air-inlet, a controlling and regulating member journaled in the body below the chamber, said member being also provided with a chamber having an inlet and a series of outlets adapted to register with those in the body, and a supplemental regulating device j ournaled across the inlet in the controlling and regulating member; of a perforated bridge-plate secured within the chamher in the body, above the gas-inlets, a screwthreaded aperture in the plate, a stem having a screw-threaded end engaging the threaded aperture, a shoulder on the free end of the stem, and a regulating device loosely surrounding the stem, an inverted perforated cup surrounding the stem and resting on the bridge plate, and a burner-tube standing within the chamber, surrounding the cup and resting on the bridge-plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a gas-burner, the combination with a body having an air-inlet and a series of gasinlets, and a controlling and regulating mem= ber 'journaled in the body beneath the chamber, said memberbeing provided with a chamber having an inlet and a series of outlets; of an inverted perforated cup within the chamber in the body, means for regulating the perforations, an automatic regulating device within the cup, and a burner-tube provided with air-inlets, said tube being adapted to stand within the chamber and surround the cup, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a gas-burner, the combination with a body having an air-inlet and a series of gasinlets, a controlling and regulating member journaled in the body below the chamber, a chamber in said member, an inlet and a series of outlets therefor, and a supplemental regulating device within the inlet; of an inverted perforated cup within the chamber in the body, means for regulating the perforations, an automatic regulating device within the cup, and a burner-tube provided with air-in lets, said tube being adapted to stand within the chamber and surround the cup, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
